A friend posted a link to this video on my FB timeline:
http://expeditionportal.com/exploring-backroads-and-finding-yourself-in-a-porsche-356/

It got me thinking about the two 1982 "parts cars" that I have sitting in the shop right now. Would be really great to make a Rallye style car out of one of them. I'm thinking no paint job, stick with the badly faded guards red, and trick it out with a lift kit, skid plates, light bar, and hopped-up turbo motor.

How hard could it be?

Don't waste money/time on a hopped up Turbo motor. That 356 only has 60 HP and does just fine.

Precisely what I thought about doing with this when I picked her up last month:
http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=42133

And like the first Barth/Kussmaul car I'd keep her NA as I don't think the extra ponies would help all that much on the dirt roads we have out here in the high desert. My daughter, who has just returned home from college, and I have kicked the idea around a bit and she thinks it would be pretty cool to do it up that way!

Good point about the hopped up motor...but I have three spare 931 complete long blocks, and no extra NA setups...plus my donors are 931 to start with...so I could just do a standard US-spec 931 build, just freshen up the motor and call it good...

I have a friend back in MI who had built a couple of rally-cross 944s, and I met a guy from MN last year who rally-crosses in a '78 NA. I'll have to ping them for details on their suspension setups.

I'd be interested in knowing their chassis setups.

Well, here's something of a starting point, although not a lot of specifics with respect to suspension.

I think it will be tough to raise the rear much without ruining geometry, unless you have custom trailing arms and half shafts. Maybe lower the torsion carrier?

From what I've gathered so far, ground clearance of 8" seems to be very doable with adjustment to stock torsion bar setup. There was mention of notching the spring plate to allow for more travel, but there was also specific mention that stock half shafts were perfectly fine. Might need some longer rear shocks. I've sent a couple of inquiries to some of the guys who have experience setting up for rally cross, will post back if get any replies.

I love this idea, and if I had a spare car, time and cash; I'd do it.

It looks like the rear suspension on the Barth cars used stock components although the trailing arms were reinforced as well as the front control arms. They also upgraded the brakes to ventilated discs all around. For my purposes I don't think I'd need maximum ground clearance and travel that a serious competitor may require as I'd probably just run some of the "legal" dirt roads out here "spiritedly" as I have no desire to compete. I'd also like to make sure it was still dual purpose so we could use it to go to the grocery store if we wanted to...I'd probably even keep the A/C, LOL!

I think it would be kinda nifty to have a street tribute rally car since you really don't see that type of thing in the States too much...especially out here in cowboy country where everybody has a pickup or Jeep!!! I'm hoping some of our friends across the ponds will chime in as rally is much more popular in other parts of the world than it is here even though I'm well aware of the small but enthusiastic group of ralliests here from my involvement with SCCA when I was the importer for Revolution Wheels and was a sponsor at some of their events back in the early 2000's.

I'm going to start researching...this could be fun !

Rasta, you've got a nifty idea but in my case anyway, since this is going to be a car I really don't need to have, I would be keeping it as (tastefully) low budget as possible. I'm also looking at something that won't take a ton in upkeep...I'm not sure if I'd even put the simple fiberglass flares on it!!!

I'm going to start reaching out to some of the Rally folks I know from my old Revolution Wheels days and see if I can get any input from them...although it's been a decade or more since I was involved...we'll see.

TJC, what was your involvement with Revolution wheels?

I have a set of classic 5 spoke 9x15 and 10x15 Revolution Wheels that fit the 4 bolt suspension that I dont know what to do with.

http://www.revolutionwheels.com/wheels/motorsport/rally/5-spoke-classic/

Nice rims, just really really big. I have no use for them.

Would look great on CGT rally car. The only 10x15 rubber that I could find available has too tall of a sidewall for street use, but would give great ground clearance on a rally tribute.

If one of you guys venturing down this path are interested, shoot me a PM.

Back in the nineties until about 10 or so years ago I was the exclusive factory authorized importer for Revolution in North America.
