I have to see. I'm coaching fall baseball this year and I have both kids games that day starting at 1130. I'd love to stop by for a bit. _________________ 1982 931- Stock with MBC at 8psi

Ahh...I can relate to that "bare tub" starting point! Enjoy and take plenty of photos along the way. _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"

Oh wow thats rusty !
That nose panel was surely replaced during her lifetime as it would be impossible that the nose panel rusted like that and the metal around it not.
So the nose panel was probably replaced and wirebrushed with no rust protection after. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

nahh. no evidence the nose was ever replaced. all the spot welds were original and no evidence of burn marks from prior spot welds. What I suspect is that because this is a very early turbo the nose panels were not yet galvanized. Still have to do some poking around on the panel to see..but that is the theory. |

so now we have an idea what was under all that dirt and crust. Some things to note. my initial belief was that the modifications for the CGT flares was achieved by cutting the outer quarter low and the outer wheel tub high then rolling the quarter over the tub. Now that we are in there it is clear that entirely new outer wheel tubs were welded in to accomodate the flares. as most of you know that is a lot a work and not typically how we see CGT flares done. If you look at the after pictures you can see that the new outer wheel tubs were coated in a very tough black undercoating. more finding to follow. |

media blasting begun and some interesting finds:
look carefully and you can see 0099. the darker square part covers the 99 and was where the washer tank rubbed away the paint.
First off, these early turbos were "chosen" to be turbos early on in the raw body stage from amongst the NA cars and before the chassis number was stampped into the shock tower and the body plate added. Both the chassis number and the turbo indicator appear to have been made by a marker. It is unclear if this was on to the raw galvanized steel or on top of the primer but this was under the silver basecoat clear and became apparent upon media blastic.
