These were the last mock-up pics we took last year, using the HY35:-

So, running 2 electric water pumps in a 'GTR' configuration requires a few small mods.
As you can see in previous photos the head had a ~32mm water flange at the rear.
I've now made a new one that offsets it to one side so I could make the inlet on the head larger. This helps the pumps with load and also improves volume going into the head.
The new one is circa ~38mm.
This shot shows it fitted before the head was machined:-
This is the hole after machining:-
Ready for welding:-
Alongside the old version:-

This is a chopped/blasted thermostat housing, ready for welding a ~40mm outlet to it:-

Took an old knackered water pump and gutted/milled it to end up with this, also ready for welding:-

Next job was to make some aluminium inserts to block the coolant channel at the rear of the head after number 4 chamber. Head has already been welded at some point.
These were then J B Welded into place slightly beneath the gasket surface. Very easy to do:-

Drilled 2 small 3.5mm holes after the J B Weld cured to release trapped air.
Also took head for a very light skim:-
Also took the time to drill out the steam vent holes between 3 and 4 and also the one on the exhaust side between 2 and 3. These were only opened out slightly to 7.5mm.
This is based on Porsche factory mods recommended for the GTR racers and found in the recent Carrera book:-
Still have some head detail work to do before it gets built up again. _________________ 1979 UK 932 |

A small peek at the new 'twin turbos' - the water pumps.
Brushless PWM controlled.
150L/min flow at 0.85bar pressure.
220L/min flow at 0.5bar pressure.

Looks like you are slowly getting there.
Why twin wastegates?
George |
Hi George, yes I'm slowly making progress.
Raceboy recently sent me a brand new VEMS ECU - this one has twin knock channels and twin EGT.
I've just put the head back together. Had to put a stock cam in as the Piper isn't 100%. Also had to replace lifter number 8 as it wasn't rotating due to being a little tight in it's bore and had worn on the top as a result.
I port-matched the new inlet manifold and have now finished the new inlet/outlet for the head and block coolant.
There's a brand new copper Cometic at 0.051" thick to install instead of the stock head gasket.
I recently took delivery of the charge cooler. I have a U.S. shipping address now so could bid on U.S. only auctions and got the cooler for half the price it normally goes for on the seller's website.
I went for their 'high boost' cooler but it's a bit on the heavy side - actually that's an understatement; I should name the cooler 'Godzilla' and not the car as it's a monster and poses a real challenge to fit!
The upside is that the core is so large I won't require a reservoir, just a high point filler.
The twin wastegates are so the exhaust gas pulses stay absolutely separate until the twinscroll turbine.
You can run one wastegate with twinscroll like Raceboy has done but I just thought I'd try something different. _________________ 1979 UK 932 |
