Hey all, I recently bought a major basket case 924 and have been trying to get it running. I replaced both fuel pumps and it would run intermittently. I was trying to think why the car would idle, then die, and stumble if any gas was given to it. I decided to check the fuel filter. When I looked I discovered the fuel line leading up to the fuel filter was in this condition. Hopefully this is the root of my problem and I can get it to run consistently!! The fuel that came out of the filter was also dark brown/black. That will be getting replaced as well.

| I replaced the fuel line but the car still sputters and dies when any gas is given to it. It also dies after idling for a little while. This is a turbo car which someone did a terrible N/A engine swap on. What makes it super confusing is that it was running well and would drive a bit a few weeks ago. I know it could be a vacuum leak but there are so many random hoses and lines in this terrible swap that I am hoping it could be something else. Any ideas what this could be? |

Sounds like it could be your fuel filter. You might go through a few from the sounds of what you found in your tank.
Also, double check the direction of flow on your fuel filter. Many people mistakenly connect the fuel filter on a 931 backwards due to the orientation of the filter and lines. Given what you've done of late you should have no problem putting it on the right way. _________________ 78 924 NA

Sorry for the double post. I am going to get it a fuel filter tomorrow. I am just confused because about 2 weeks ago, the car would run and drive without a problem and now it idles for about a minute then dies. If I give it any gas it will shudder and stall out. I can sometimes get it to rev but rarely. I am just confused as to how it could have gone from running fine to running like crap. The oxygen light is also on, I will replace the sensor also if the fuel filter yields the same result. Any ideas why the performance would degrade so drastically in such a short period of time?
Thanks for the help. it's much appreciated |

One possibility is that some stuff has clogged your fuel filter. I suggested this because you said that brown/black stuff came out of your fuel filter. If more brown/black stuff came out of your tank and into your fuel filter, this may have caused it to have reduced flow.
There are many other possibilities too.
Rather than just blindly replacing parts, a fuel system flow test might be in order. Pull all injectors, and see if they can sustain a spray at the correct rate. The procedure is covered in sufficient detail in the Hayne's manual. _________________ 78 924 NA

And do a fuel system pressure test. Sounds like you are running lean which can be caused by the control pressure being too high due to blocked control pressure regulator (sometimes called Warm Up Regulator). Measuring the fuel system pressures will tell you a lot about where to look for the problem otherwise you will be doing little more than replacing things at random. _________________ 1981 931 series2 Euro spec |
