the car i once had years ago was a 1977.5 924 and weighs in at 2344 lbs according to http://www.connact.com/~kgross/FAQ/944faq02.html. so the question is where does the extra weight come from in from, for instance, a 1981 924 at 2612 lbs? thats another 268 lbs from what? and then we have the turbo coming in at another 167 lbs above that, although according to wiki the turbo engine assembly weighed about 65 lb more, and yes the suspension was a bit revised but at the cost of another 100 lbs, really?

and besides going the aftermarket route to lighten things up on the latter cars mentioned (fiberglass hood, plexiglass windows, etc) is there a direct swap for some older components (76-77.5) to lighten things up on the newer (78-82) models that im looking to possibly buy? maybe im being picky but going from a 77NA to 79turbo is going to cost me a 435 lbs penalty that i cant believe is going to offset the extra turbo power that much. and im only considering bone stock not the wonderful possiblilty of cranking the boost up a bit and flying by any 911.

Rule nr 1: Never trust the internets when it comes to car weights

The early car have a much simpler rear suspension. And i think they also added more insulation material aswell. Electric mirrors ads a lot of weight. I think the later cars might even have electric roof and rear hatch. And if you read the documentation you can see other differences like reinforced roof on later models. And I think more kit was standard, which might affect the specified weight on paper.

Turbo also has bigger transaxle shaft, bigger brakes and were better equipped in general (electric mirrors, el windows, head light washers, alot of sound insulation, alarm etc..

My guess is that later 924s weigh around 30-50 kg more than the later ones. and another 50-60kg added on the turbo. My friend has a 76 924, my turbo version is a MUCH faster car, but these are euro spec of course..

well after doing a quick power/weight its pretty plausable for the turbo to out shine in either us or euro spec. and i had just started looking at full specs for standard equipment and, as the years went on, additional optional equipment i guess its pretty easy to see it add up pretty quick, especially considering the mechanical upgrades through out the years.

so basically, i need a '77 924, throw in a turbo engine, and turn the boost up a bit and ill have a street legal go kart with full interior haha

Apples to apples.
Are we comparing cars that didn't have AC, power mirrors and windows to cars that did?
Add all those components together and it's easy to gain considerable weight.

Oh, and be careful with that boost, Eugene.
