I've decided to keep my 16" flat discs for street use and not ruin the tyres on track...
I have an extra set of 7x15 ET52,3 Teledials that I intend to use on track events. The tracks around here are rather short (2miles) with lots of tight turns. The tyre I'm going for is the Hankook RS-2. The question is which size would be more appropriate, 195/50/15 or 205/50/15?
The 195's are 100 euros cheaper for the set. The turn in should be better than on the wider tyres but will the traction be enough... _________________ 931 S2, 1981 |

| Like most racers, Ive been running 225/50/15 on 6" rims or 225/45/15 on 7" rims for years. Only time I've used 205's was on the fronts for a little while then went to a square setup using 225s. I think the 195s aren't enough tire. If you have to choose one of the two, pick the 205s. JMHO. |

I really depends on:
1. How fast are you as a driver
2.What kind of tyres will you use
Toyo R888 for example I wouldnt run anything wider than 205 on 7", they are very wide for being 205 and even at 7" you can get some weird "toyo wrinkle" (as its called here) on the surface of the tyre.
I have also tried Michelin Pilot sport cup on track (205 7"), they are narrower but faster and more stable. could maybe get 225s on there but I wouldnt. It really depends on tyre.
For the Rs-2s I wouldnt go with anything narrower then 205, at least if you plan on doing some decent speed around the track _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Thanks guys for sharing your experiences.
Looks like the 205's are the best bet.
Just to clarify, I'm not a race ace, just an average track day pilot. I do about 3 track weekends a year, so I'm not going to spend anything near the price of Toyo R888's, even though they most likely are the best you can get. I've managed 2 weekends this summer with 12+ year old normal 225/50/16 M+S Hankook´s at front and normal 245/45/16 BF Goodrich tyres at the back... so pretty much anything should be some form of improvement
... On the other hand I'm getting at the level where both the suspension and the driver exceeds the capacity of the tyres, so it would be nice to see how much quicker I could be with decent tyres
An other thing is that I'm going to experiment something called slalom at the next track meet. I don't really know what its called else where... its racing against the clock on a large parking place through a track marked by cones
... I guess narrow tyres might be quicker in the tight turns... _________________ 931 S2, 1981 |

You will get faster, so better buy good tyres now The rs2 should be pretty good for a street/track tyre. The R888 are okay, but there are better tyres. check camskill.co.uk for kuhmo v70, great tyre, not so good in the rain though. Otherwise stick with the rs2, youll have loads of fun and hopefully no overheated tyres !
Ive heard the rs2 need a bit of warm up before slalom (but not as much as R compound) to get the best performance. Wider is often better, but slalom sheds a lot of tyre, so extremely wide is extremely expensive You will have fun with your 205s.
Slalom like this ?:

(dampers were in the softest setting, youll notice if you look at the vid:) )
We normally do it at air fields around sweden, this is one in the vid is much to tight, but still fun (and in the middle of stockholm). Needs a lot of practice to be fast. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Looks like fun
That's the same thing we do over here, I've just never tried it before...
I've heard a lot of good things about the RS-2's. Not quite a racing tyre or even a real semi slick but rather decent as a track day tyre and not horrible in normal driving either... _________________ 931 S2, 1981 |
