I've been lurking for a few months, and for many years pondering the purchase of a 924. I guess the only thing stopping me from buying, is the concern over repair & maintenance frequency and overall ownership costs. My price range would be up to $7000. I would be able to pay cash.

My questions are:

1) Can a competent auto mechanic do all that is necessary to repair and maintain a 1977-1983, 924? I am disabled & only able to do the simplest things.

2) I realize that the 924s would be the better performer, but am aware that it would most likely need a Porsche mechanic as well as being more expensive. Would it be cheaper overall to buy a 924s with 20 - 40000 fewer miles than a 924, along with the "S" being 5-10 yrs. younger? Or, would the ownership cost still be "noticeably" less with the NA 924?

Thanks to all that can advise.

The competancy you need in a mechanic is knowledge about older European cars. The K-Jetronic system can be a mystery to a mechanic who only knows carbys or modern EFI. However, it was used in a lot of Volvos and Audis so it shouldn't be hard to find someone who knows it. That's how I found my current guy.

I also have limitations due to a work related accident years ago, but don't consider myself as disabled. We just never know what we can accomplish until we give it a go. I hope that you can get your 924 and give everything a whirl. I'm here if you need to talk, as we all do at some point need to vent. Nothing wrong with making new friends, right. My 924 was purchsaed in Jan. and it's a slow process getting things going. I've spent the better part of each day to reviewing the info the this forum contains. There are plenty of owners ready to coach you so just hop on and we can get these rides out on the road. Everything we need to know about these cars is here, just takes a bit of time to find it and if all else fails throw a post out and see the responces. My name is JIM and I will get my car roadworthy. Later, take care

Thank you Wade. I wonder if the current generation of mechanics will carry on their knowledge to future generations.

Thanks for the kind words Jim. By the way, I've spent some time in Winnipeg, and thought it was a special place. Of course, I wasn't there for the winter.

Pecci - I've had a 924 for 15 years and I believe that its the most maintainable sports car ever made. If you buy one in good shape, it will serve you well. You do need to know the car and be a good mechanic - you don't have to do work yourself, but you sometimes need to oversee the mechanic. This forum is absolutely the best auto forum anywhere. Buy the right car and you should have some good fun. - Peter

PS I'd stick with the 924 or 944. The supercharger is OK, but its more things to attend to & you should simply build a bigger engine if you need more power. The 924 isn't a dragster - its all about going around corners faster than any car on the planet.

Peter did you mean, stick to 944 and 924, or did you mean to say 924S? Being that the 944 and 924S share much of the same.

Thank you all, for the useful info. I think since I do my own work and probably never will, i will hold off, or perhaps buy a newer sports coup (ie: 90s -early 00s.
