Good Evening all,
So I did it, I bought a Porsche!
Ive always loved the 924, toyed with buying one when I was a bit younger ad lived in the UK but stuck with Alfa's.
So the 924, she's a 1980 Non turbo.
Needs some work....
I seen the car on eBay and said it was bought as project from Porsche A Part, called the guys there. They gave me a really good history about the car. One owner, old chap been restoring the old girl.
Chaps I got it off where moving and wouldn't have the space to keep it.
Now, it needs some wore work. Guys at Porsche part said it was re wired due to the fuse box been relocated. Is this common?
Still needs to be finished they said its about 90% done.
All the inside is out. As in dash is out etc.
Car is in primer, pulled a few favors and can get a respray for a good price. Feeling Porsche metallic white....
Going to put some good sound killer carpet in, and a cd player.
So, how much have jumped into?
Want to keep her pretty standered,
Would post pics but my iPad is been rubbish!
Thank you all,
Ps some beautiful 924's on here! _________________ Winers never quit, and quiters never Win! |

Is it possible to get a look on the electric system, could be a real nightmare (thats my experience on fiddled electrical systems)..
How about gbox and engine, working? This project could be a lot of work, but sure at a really good price. Problem is if parts are missing etc, that could make a reassemble a pain. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Gearbox and motor have been rebuilt... By Porsche! They guy who had it spent a fair amount of money on her.
I paid $900 for the car! Steal as it was sold by Porsche a Part for $4800 7 months ago!
When it left them all it need was a respray. Then the chap who had it as a "project" just wanted to change the color but got told that he needed to re wire the fuse box..... Was started but not finished. Had a Auto Elec take a look and he said about $300 max.
I just want to drive her! _________________ Winers never quit, and quiters never Win! |

Sounds like what it's actually worth. As parts.
What's the plan, man? You looking for a show car or just some beater P.O.S. you can torture 'til it dies?
You a mechanic? A body man? Just a schmo with more dollars than sense?
Post some pictures and plans. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Fuse box is usually under the dash and a PIA to get to. Where did they relocate yours? _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

Uaual reason for any problems with the fuse box is due to leaks from a rusted out battery box above. Can't think of any sound reason for messing about with it otherwise! _________________ 1984 n/a Ruby Red Metallic

So plan is to get her back in one piece first off.
Want to keep here pretty stock, only newish thing I plan to put in is a cd player and new speakers.
I'm thinking Arctic White. Or Ranger rover sport sun burnt orange... The other half isn't feeling that color though.
Not in the motor trade, Work as a Development Consulant . Get paid money to give people education (In a nutshell) But I'm training to be a pilot.
Scm924s, I spoke to the guys at Porsche a part. They said that's why it was done.
It's been relocated to under the bonnet up by the front strut.
Has anyone re-wired a 924? _________________ Winers never quit, and quiters never Win! |

Just some thoughts.
Colour. White is definitely resaleable, and the 924 does look good in white. But it also looks good in red. And I suspect that may be more saleable. (I know someone who has been tempted to buy a 924 but not if it wasn't red.)
Fusebox. Porsche did fairly modular wiring with replacable looms, most of which came back to the fusebox. The Haynes book has some pretty good wiring diagrams, but aren't oriented to replacing the wiring looms. Having seen numerous threads about PO mistakes, I would think the biggest problem rewiring it is colour-coding the wires the same as Porsche did.

Congrats on the purchase!
Get the Haynes Manual, study all of the 924.org site and start reading all the helpful info on here.
There is quite a lot to learn with these cars, the CIS Fuel Injection for example was a challenge for me but very rewarding once I learnt and was able to fixed it myself.
Let the fun begin. _________________ Tom

Howdy,
Welcome to the club!!!
I started my project around 3 years ago and its almost finished, cant wait to get it on the road.
I changed the colour of mine from petrol blue to guards red, very happy with the result.
Have fun with it, if its stressing you out shut the shed door and jump onto the forum you'll soon find out someone else has had the same problem as you.
Cheers,
PS: my parts car is a 1980 and I have lots of bits left over that you might need _________________ 1978 924 RoW 5-Speed (Current Project)

Alan, I'm not a true Aussie.... I'm a POM (Awaiting banter)
I think I'll go with the white, but the modern Porsche metallic white. (If that makes sense)
The chap has been very anal about all the work done, which pleases me. Has a brand new clutch fitted. He had health problems and ended up been placed in a wheel chair. Hence the sale.
I think I'll be able to get her going pretty quick.
Haynes manuel has been ordered!
Muz924, I think I'm going to need rear seats if you have them? Where are you in Mel? I live in Cheltenham, what body shop did you use?
Just sucks at present as I can't pick the car up till the 7th _________________ Winers never quit, and quiters never Win! |

I am near Chadstone so not too far away. The rear seats are OK, however the luggage curtain is sun damaged. Yours if you want them.
I did all the body work and paint myself at home! It was a learning experience....but thats what the project is all about!!
