SHE LIVES!!!!!!!
http://s1086.photobucket.com/albums/j449/Ian89C4/?action=view¤t=P1020085.mp4
Turns out a faulty AAV was the hay straw that let me start her.
I need to toss out a huge THANK YOU to JoeWest for entertaining my millions of questions and for helping me to get her started. This process would have been weeks or months longer without his guidance.
I will keep the pics coming as I keep rolling on the transformation.
Cheers,

Sorry for no updates in a while. I have been out of the country and have had a slow time getting back into it.
Where we stand:
I was letting her run about two weeks ago and just had the instruments sitting in the dash. The tach decided to slide down a bit and ground against the bulkhead. Needless to say, much smoke ensued, the kill handle was pulled, and much 12v wiring had to be re-run....at least there is not too much of it.
She is running again, but.....still haven't set the mixture so she backfires quite a bit...waiting until I get her rolling and then I will just truck her to the P-car shop and have my crack mechanic tune her up =-)
finished cleaning up and painting the boot.
Have five lug (86 944) spindles on the front, trading out the entire rear torsion bar assembly for an 88 944's set up....this will take a while. Got a set of 29mm hollow sway aways off of e-bay (if it was from someone on here...Thanks!!)
Painted the header panel to give a hint at what she will look like.....I will post pics later tonight.
Cheers,

OK, Pics as promised:-)
The interior as she stands...a complete mess
The "finished" boot
10 points if you can tell me the famous race car she is going to be painted as =-) The Porsche emblem is a sticker version they used on the 964 RSR's and RS's - thought it would give that track car touch
Heat protection wrapping on everything around the exhaust
Right hub....powder coated a-arms, new bushings all around, new ball joint, new tie rod end....in the future there will be a very nice Ground Control strut in there with an adjustable camber plate, 400lb spring, and Koni adjustable insert.......just use your imagination =-) I do every time I look at her
However, at the moment I am doing surgery on the 911. Going to the track this weekend, time trial at North Carolina Center for Automotive Research, and while doing my checks found quite a bit of oil in the engine tin of the left side of the engine. I have had this problem before, so I pulled off the valve cover and lo and behold, the rocker arm shaft was leaking. This is a fairly common problem on the 911's of any age. Porsche designed the shaft to seal with only the torque placed on the bolt going through the shaft to compress the shaft enough to form a metal on metal seal. As they wear, even the tiniest amount, they stop sealing. Oh and it is impossible to get a torque wrench in there with the engine in the car....... So it just takes some vigilance.....I seemed to have missed this one for a little while (bad p-car owner!!!)
I have decided to try and nip it in the bud this time with seals that Porsche used on there 911 RSR's and 935's. Of course, as with any rush order, not here on time and I will be rushing to get the car back together, fully prepped, on the trailer, and get on my to the track. Gotta love that motor sport addiction!!
Just some pics of the surgical site and the culprit....

Welcome back to the states! Nothing like smoke-checking a gauge and some wires. Brings back fond memories...
Are you using the stock exhaust manifold on the 924? I had issues with heat and header wrap on the manifold log did not seem to work as well as the factory heat shield that wraps around the spark plug leads.
Project is looking great and I cannot wait to see that paint job completed!
Have a fat DE event this weekend and I will post some video sunday. Cannot wait to use the new Hoosiers...... _________________ '79 924 Supercharged / Track Prepared

I don't want to hijack, but here is that video I promised in my last post.
http://youtu.be/wmU7Or0fFEE
I think the exaust is a little to "poppy" and will need a small muffler added.....
This was all good until the gearbox died near the end of the day....more to come on that in another thread.... _________________ '79 924 Supercharged / Track Prepared

Joe,
Great run! Looked like a blast. That is an interesting track. Was it in the parking lot of a sports complex? I like the layout - very nice mix of turns. Sorry about the trans issues!
What do you think the issue was with the exhaust? I am running the same set up as you (Bursch Header with thrush glass pack and a down turn).
Here is a link to a few of my runs:

here is a video of a few of the cars that were there, a great shot of me flying by at around 1:30. More good shots of the old 911 towards the end. Also some great shots of the two Noble M400's that showed up.

NICE videos Ian. That 911 is sic.
After reading a little on exhaust tuning, my uneducated opinion is that the exhaust is just not controlled with the right muffler(s). To be honest, I do not mind the popping enough to experiment with more/less/different mufflers. Its only popping when I lift 100%.
Heat was the only issue with the manifold when I did not run the factory heat sheild on the very top. Really heat soaked the plug wires bad without it installed and only using header wrap.
Side note: With the engine belly pan installed, by engine bay temps were reduced by 13%! And I do not have to worry about crap flying into the engine bay and possibly fouling my timing belt!!
The track is the Pomona Fairplex (L.A. Fairgrounds) which has had a large underused parking lot confirgured to a pretty good circuit. REAL bumpy in spots, and they use it to train the Sherriffs to drive as well. Lot's of fun nonetheless!!
Keep us posted on the 924 up-fixin!! _________________ '79 924 Supercharged / Track Prepared

Pulled the original torsion tube. Now she has a complete 924S set up =-)
I have 29mm hollow torsion bars in there right now (bigger ones not in the budget right now). Everything is just sitting there, ride height not set. Nasty shock absorber is just there for fitting purposes. I like to notch things up first prior to doing the final set, also have to wait to get all my poly and solid bushings =-)
Getting there....

Here is a good reference to review before taking on the re0ndexing when the time comes:
http://944spec.org/944SPEC/technical-articles/42-torsion-bar-re-indexing
You can get a preview of your ride height by puting the jack under the wheel and collapsing the travel before buttoning everything up! _________________ '79 924 Supercharged / Track Prepared

Thanks for the article!! not looking forward to reindexing though.....looks like a PITA. I still have the old torsion tube with the TB indexed off of the original ride height as a guide.
Rasta Monsta:
Nope, haven't rebushed yet, waiting for all of my poly and solid bushing to get here. Everything is just siting there so that i could make sure that everything fit. Which is a good thing....found out I need the 924S drive axles.
Cheers,

More updates:
Finished with the left front hub assembly (take 2) - made sure the rotors are within specks - good all around, just a little rusty, finished with the brake cooling tubes + fresh air blowers. The Fresh air blowers are for marine applications so are water proof and will help to provide a constant flow of air. Got the idea from a 911 buddy and it works out very well for him. - The oil is not from the 924 - left over from an oil change on the 911 -
Also finished priming the left side - should have the side fully painted by the weekend - pending on the work schedule
Had to toss another pic of the old 964 at the last Time Trial
