|
|
My ls1 924 project kicking off. First shots of big holes in firewall and tunnel, test fitting motor to work out if I can get away without having to use a bonnet scoop. Start of a long process but more to come soon.

It will run an ls1, t-56 6speed, LSD IRS, 944 turbo brembos and control arms, fuchs wheels, dual brake MC floor mount pedal box, fully registered and complied for use on public roads in australia [/url]

| yeah, just worked out how to link in the pics. this is my first post on a forum, long time lurker, first time member. I have taken inspiration from applebits build, main differences being i'm trying to get engine and gerbox s bit lower+ further back for weight and bonnet clearance, going manual (6 speed tremac) and maintaining the IRS rear end as i am going to mount a holden LSD up where the transaxle was and modify holden half shafts to fit. hoping for a bullet proof drive train by using all holden (chev) v8 stuff. |

I've been bouncing the idea of an engine swap for a while. I would probably go with an audi 5 cylinder and a 944 transaxle over a V8 swap though. _________________ 81 924 N/A

| engine weighs 30 or so kilo (60 pounds) more than the iron block 2 liter NA that I pulled out. it will sit about 3 inches further back than the old motor. the gearbox weighs 65 kilos but is sitting near as makes no difference in the middle of the car and as low as it can go without affecting ground clearance and the drivers seat (and me 85kg) will go about 2 inches further back till hard against the (removed) rear seat to make way for floor mounted pedals and new trans tunnel. The diff I'm putting in weighs a resonable amount and will include part of the rear cradle from the car it came out of. Adding a (road legal) half cage at the back and relocanting the battery to rear will hopefully offset the relatively minor weght increase at the front. won't really know till I get it on some scales but hoping to keep overall weight down and front to rear as close to 50:50 as possible. been lanning the build for several years now and chose chev over other considered options (924 engine turbo or superchaged, 944 turbo motors, 928 engines, audi v8, toyota iuz-fe). Have been told that there is a limit to power and torque that a porsche trans axle will handle and the strongest, which i'm told is a 944 turbo box will only handle about 500hp and in australia these boxes fetch stupid money (US/AU$9000+) and are hard to find. |

one of my mates supercharged and turbogharged his alfetta GT 2L. here is him testing it at the track with my car before the engine swap (original 2L, 4 speed and drum rear brakes) in car footage shot inside the porsche

his engine cost more than I am planning on spending on my entire build |

It'll be interesting to see how this works out. I often wondered why applebit didn't take your appoach with the rear end - it should handle much better than a live rear axle. _________________ Andrew

just curious whether you have got project approval through QLD transport yet, from questioning a few engineers there's a 3:1 multiplier on N/A power to weight ratio, so that would eliminate putting a 5 litre engine in a 1 tonne car ??
have they relaxed the laws recently? or are you an engineer yourself?
btw
hope the project works out too...
