Anyone done this lately? Any tips? I am a little hesitant to use penetrant, out of concern for the internal lubrication of the joint. . .if there is any.
TIA

Lubricant for the spline shafts for removal of entire shaft? Or, removal of the itsy bitsy u-joints? I have three spare shafts if yer needing a complete one. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Gonna swap out my steering rack, so I need to get the u-joint loose from it. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Check. I did that to Spike last summer, had a spare rebuilt unit I got. I sprayed the spline shaft, all is well. Center the steering though with the plug/knotch/can't remember thing, before taking it apart. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

I just pulled the bolts and pried the opening a little with a screwdriver (heh) and it came apart pretty easily.
Penetrant shouldn't be an issue, just wash it out well once its apart. _________________ Stefan

One thing that really helps getting the steering coupler off is to remove the steering rack mounting bolts and let the rack hang. I've found if you remove the pinch bolt on the coupler you still may not have enough room to pop the coupler off the rack given the extreme angle the coupler takes on, even after driving a screwdriver into the coupler to spread it. Of course, since you're replacing your rack, that'll make things easier. _________________ '84 944 - kid blew motor
