Just picked up my new baby this evening. 88 924S, 47k orig miles.

I have service records showing the timing belt was changed in 02 but less than 5k miles ago.
Should I be getting this done ASAP or am I ok??

Don't start that engine.

As has already been written. Have the car towed/flatbed to a shop with 944 experience. Make sure to get the complete FOES. Ask the shop i n advance what they will be doing as the complete FOES.

If they answer, Huh? Run away.

Ask to see their P9201 belt tension gauge and calibration bar, and if they say they don't need one, or use one, RUN AWAY EVEN FASTER.

You guys are scaring me a little although I know about the belt issues. I am having an '87 delivered tomorrow. Hoping to get it off the car carrier and into my garage safely. Will do the flatbed from there later to the mechanic. I don't have the service records so am hoping nothing happens in the few hundred feet I have to drive it. Less than 40K on car but I have no info on the belt. It has been being driven.

Of course to make things even better it is supposed to snow like crazy tomorrow and the temps are supposed to fall off the end of the world.

Indeed, cleanest 924 i've ever seen in person! A few little knicks on the nose from road rocks but other than that she almost appears to be a new vehicle!
I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon to drop it off for FOE service. Looks like I have a break in the SNOW!!
Hopefully she runs as nice as she looks. Test drive + 10 miles home sofar and nothing seemed to indicate she wouldn't.

I brought mine to the shop for FOE service Saturday, it was probably close to 50 degrees. I think your "Snownami" must have been headed this way though because come Sunday morning Columbus looks like your pic.

Well I guess I "broke her in" today! About 130 miles roundtrip to Hocking Hills. We actually were close to 60 degrees here! Anyway, everything seems good, took to those twisty roads like a fish to water.
I know i'm not telling anyone here anything they don't already know, but, yeah, the automatic is not nearly as much fun to drive as the manual...

So about 10 minutes into my trip I hit the power sunroof switch. One arm was connected and like trying to raise it and the other arm was not connected to roof and not moving. I played around with the switch a little and end result was both arms are not holding roof and are in the "in" position. Hitting the switch does make a motor noise but neither arm moves. I took out the sunroof for the remainder of my trip as it was kinda lifting up some in the back at high speed and I was afraid of it popping out. I assume my motor is ok and maybe the arms are shot? Is there a way to just like LOCK it in place and forget about it??

welcome to the wonders of the 924. lol

After dumping cash into a belt service your sunroof gears strip. It has happened to most of us. The gears are located in gearboxes behind the sunroof and under a trim panel in the roof. They cost about 10 dollars each, but be warned that if you change them you need to carefully educate yourself on the workings of the late 944 sunroof mechanism. Your slip clutch will have to be re-adjusted or you run risk of stripping your new gears too.

Sounds like you have stripped gears. Common problem, and not hard or expensive to fix. Check out www.clarks-garage.com under Sunroof in the "Garage Shop Manual".

Or, you can convert to manual latches, like the older 924/931. Much simpler, more reliable setup. Saves weight, too.

lol, thanks guys for the quick reply!
Without modification or any new parts do you know if I can just lock it in the closed position?
I don't know that it WILL pop out while driving but it certainly was popping up at high speeds.

You cannot lock an electric sunroof when the gears are stripped, however there is a way if are willing to fiddle with it.

I drove an 88 924s for a while with bad gears and my solution to the roof poping open under speed was to put pennies between the sunroof gearbox covers and the lift arms. This is tricky because to remove or install the rear roof trim panel the sunroof has to be open for acess to some of the screws. It is do-able though. The gearbox cover plate presses the penny against the side of the lift arm causing the friction to hold the roof closed under speed. You don't want to tighten cover plate screwsall the way down, just enough to hold the arm. Too much you may crack the cover plate. If you put everything together with the roof shut you won't be able to put the two front screws in the rear roof panel. When I did it, I installed everything with the roof up slightly and then when I was done pressed the roof down.


Or you can just replace the gears, but you have to understand how the stop switches work and set everything right, including the slip clutch.
