Maybe it's more common in Europe, I really don't know.

Anyway what parts in the ignition can cause an irregular spark pattern?

The stuff I can think of:
The shaft that opens the contact points has some clearance, if it starts vibrating it won't open the points regularly.
Condenser?
Maybe a bad ignition coil?
Bad wires/connections to the ignition coil or to the distributor?
Rotor?
Distributor cap?

Hi, I have an old contact distributor from a european '76 lying around somewhere, it's yours if you want it, I have no use for it.

Have you got a new rotor, cap, and wire to coil? Did you oil the sponge under rotor?

Does your dist have the small wire connection on the body below the cap?

Also, are your vac lines routed correctly to the dist for advance etc.?

Thanks, we'll keep in thouch. I'm not sure if the distributor is broken, but if it is I'd like to accept your offer.

I haven't renewed those yet. I don't like replacing stuff when I'm not sure if they're malfunctioning. I did replace the wire from coil to distributor. Since rotor, cap, condenser and contact breaker aren't that expensive I might as well replace them..

The vacuum line runs from air intake manifold to the distributor. The rubber tubes to connect the line had some tearings in them. The local car partdealer didn't have any replacements for them. I taped the tearings and made sure they were connected. I do hear some kind of blowing air noise coming from the distributor. It's not coming from the vac lines. So could be something is wrong with the advance unit. A broken advance unit explains why it has trouble with a cold start, but the pattern of spark is also a bit irregular when it's running hot. Seems like sometimes a spark gets skipped (with the timing light), the motor makes a bump then as well.

About the small wire, where should I look for that one? Next to the contact breaker?

a broken advance is possible.
My car would still run but not well and the advance was totally shot.

Yeah, those wires are just below the cap, doubt that's a problem though. Get new cap, rotor, and vac lines,... oil that sponge!

I just did some tweaking on mine tonight, adjusted A/F,timing, etc., sounding strong now, was a little hesitant before on the throttle, better now, test drive tomorrow.

I also noticed a skip on the timing light like you were saying, it only happened a couple times while I was adjusting everything, you need to hurry up and figure out what the heck is going on, I'm running out of ideas here.

Edit: Oh yeah, this is sounding a little familiar, maybe some ideas here...http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=33780

I've bought a new (used but good working) distributor, cap, rotor, contact breaker, condenser and a new coil. I'm going to install them next week, when they arrive with the mail.

Surely hope this will do the trick..

How many vacuum lines run to the distributor? Only one right? I think it's the only vac line I have.. Is this good?

My US model has 2 vac lines, check vac diagram, I keep forgetting you have a euro, maybe put some info in your profile to help remind us.

Well, I went out this morning for a much anticipated test drive, complete disappointment .Hard to start, hard to warm up, runs like crap.

Seemed to be running great last night, sitting still, really bad this morning. Ended up setting back close to the way it was, a little leaner now though.

I should have left well enough alone, oh well, I guess that's part of the joy.

I replaced my contact points, with a clearance of 0,4 mm and also replaced the condenser. Seems to start better now! The car still is a bit shaky.. I'm going to adjust the timing a bit more to see if I can get it better.

Joejax, we're in a somewhat identical situation! Maybe it helps if you adjust your timing, adjust your valve clearance and take the car to a garage to set the CO right with the proper idle. The CO-screw is really hypersensitive.

Where can I find the vac diagram? Can't find it in Haynes.
