i couldnt find the old thread but basically it said the quickest way to remove the under carpet/battery tray rubber was air chiesel and compressor.
Just read an interesting article in a magazine saying to use DRY ICE...leave it on top of rubber and within seconds/minutes the rubber will snap right off leaving metal fine _________________ 1979 NA

I think the air chisel method would damage the zinc-based galvanized layer...plus create a bunch of zinc dust, which is very bad for you. Inhaling zinc dust can kill you.
The dry ice method sounds pretty interesting...might have to try that.

There are two types of sound deadener. The stuff I removed with the air chisel is the stuff on the floor boards and on the rear hatch area. By going at it on an angle, I avoided doing much damage to the underlying paint. In a couple of spots, I accidentally punched through the thin sheet metal, but these will be easily repaired, and can be avoided with care. This is the stuff you can probably remove with dry ice, as I could see it easily cracking and breaking away.
The other stuff is much harder to remove, and can be found in several locations throughout the chassis, including the sides of the torque tube tunnel, the hump between the two rear seats, up under both footwells, and in both of the tray areas between the windshield and firewall. The only effective way I found to remove this was using a hair dryer as a heat gun, and using a large flat blade spackling knife and a smaller chisel or paint scraper. This is the stuff that will give you blisters trying to remove. You can use a propane torch as a heat source, but that is much messier and stinkier, and frankly, I found that the hair dryer produced enough heat to make the stuff peel off pretty easily. The problem is some of the angles are tough to get to, and it still requires a bit of elbow grease to persuade the stuff to get started. Once you get an edge, and its heated up properly, it moves pretty quickly. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

How easy and cheap is liquid nitrogen to get in Australia?
You will need either a cheap dewar flask or a few thermoses to hold the stuff. If you use the thermoses, don't put the lids on tight.
That stuff does a number on (previously) soft materials, most adhesives, and might give better results than dry ice.
Besides, when you are done, and if you have any left over, you can make some of the best ice cream you have ever had.

Check out your local ice cream shops. I know Baskin & Robbins around here sells it. _________________ Stefan
