im 13. in january, i wanted a car. not a car to drive, but one to wrench with. I found a '91 civic for 500 bucks. the car was a beater, blown head, no exaust, shit interior, and the seller had shit for brains. on the day that i was gonna go buy that basket case, i stumbled upon an ad for a '79 toofah. i didnt know much about the car, but i was always, and always will be a porsche fan. after two months of planning, and haggling, i lowered the price from 2 grand, to 700 bucks. I have owned the car for a month now, and i just got it running on the bottle. (fuel pump is toast, orderd a new one) From a month of praising my primer coloured 924, and working my heart out on it, i have learened that there truly is a cult opbsession behind these wonderful cars.

I think that if i could describe mine with one phrase, it would be " diamond in the rough"

When I was a teenager, one of the most enjoyable cars I got to drive was a 924. I was hooked. I loved how they looked and drive.

We lived outside of town and on our way to our house we had a junkyard we always drove past. One day on my way home from school I saw a red 924 at the junkyard. I begged my dad to get out and look at it. The car didn't need much but didn't run.

My dad said "hell no, you won't get one of those" - he hated them. Over time, I saw the car slowly but surely disappear into a pile of pieces as it was parted out, broken, smashed, dismantled... obliterated.

Time flew by. Things changed. I got married, then I got divorced. After the divorce I decided to become me again. My new lady (who is now my wife) has been insanely supportive of my Porsche addiction. I bought my first Porsche. A 1977 Porsche 924. Just like the one I saw in the junkyard.

The car didn't run, needed a lot.... a whole lot... but I wanted a car I could learn from top to bottom and go through and learn how the car functions and get intimate with it. I found just that. It's now approaching it's "ready to go have fun" mark.

The car was a single owner car. All the original paperwork. The wife's husband passed away in an unfortunate time. She left the car as e memorial on the spot where he died at their house so no one would park there. The car sat for 10 years till she found someone to marry to again. It was one of those tragic stories with a happy ending. She told me if I would get the car back on the road, it was mine for $750. The car had a history, and a special story, and I could tell she wanted to see it go to a happy home. They inquired greatly about my intentions with the car, and after what seemed like a job interview over email, they sold the car to me.

The car had been since a lot of work and effort but very rewarding. To see the pictures of the day it was in off the trailer, to today, and the first time it filled up in the gas station in 10 years was quite a moment. The kid at the gas station asked me about it and I told him he had the honors of giving it's first spit of life in 10 years and he was pretty stoked.

I enjoy not only driving the cars, but the journey along the way. Every Porsche I've bought has a story. Most of the reason I buy them (aside from their handling, interesting behavior, and joy of driving) is because of the story. A car is only a car without a story, a journey taken, and having gone somewhere or done something. At least to me.

Thus far my car took a long journey of years of enjoyment. It became a memorial, and sat for 10 years, to be resurrected and enjoyed years later.

I still email the original owners now and then to let them know how the progress is going. They were insanely happy to hear about it starting up for the first time last year. So was I.

A lot of people always are interested in cars, and will say "cool car" - but for me, I enjoy driving my cars and sharing the story with people. When someone goes "Cool car, what is it?" and you tell them, I insert a small portion of the story. Most people find it interesting and always want to hear. It's like storytime. At which point you're no longer sharing the car, but the car's story and it's journey. And that makes it a personal experience for those people, and they become part of the story and feel like part of it. This is what I've always found interesting about cars is how the story always brings enthusiasts to a point of mutual interest.

Where has it been? What's the story on this one? Is that original? Where'd it come from?

Have a good week.
