Welcome along!
Hitting reverse is seat to gear stick interface unit issues....
You'll get used to it, my girlfriend can cope
They have normally got knackered synchros on 1st adn 2nd, you can repair them though, if you are handy with spanners and are willing to tackle it. Search in your friend _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

If it really bothers you, you can upgrade to the same box as is in your 944 (Audi 016) you just need to change the torque tube, shift linkage, cut the mounts off the torsion bar carrier, add the mount to the trunk floor and put it all back together.
The bushings at the rear of the linkage do tend to go bad overtime and cause the shifts to get sloppy. If you have more than say an inch of slop movement at the shifter, then you might need to replace the bushings.
To repair you'll need to contort yourself under the car and remove the linkage. Many find removing the transmission is the easiest way to do that effectively.
Otherwise, I found that I just have to learn to slow my shifts a little, the syncro's appreciate the help. I also find that if I think ahead about when I'm going to need to shift and what gear I'm going to next reduces the likely hood of missing a shift or selecting the wrong gear. Eventually this becomes second nature and due to muscle memory I don't even think about it anymore. _________________ Stefan

In case anyone was wondering about my screen name, it comes from my old project where I was combining a Fiat X-1/9 and a Chrysler 2.2 Turbo drivetrain. I used that screen name on a number of different forums to keep it easy to remember Unfortunately, it didn't ever get finished since I found my 924 project and it was closer to completion out of the box with similar performance capabilities. _________________ Stefan

Not if the knuckle is worn out like mine is. If the bushings are missing completely, the aluminum knuckle gets worn out on the harder steel pin.
I have a spare set of linkage that I'm going to modify to use a small, sealed U-joint.
I think I wrote or added to a How To on replacing those bushings. I'm not sure I would do them in the car, but the trickiest piece is getting the pin driven out to get the joint apart, as the bushings get put in on the inside of the aluminum knuckle and the pin driven back in place.
After looking at the pictures, you can see why some people cut a hole in the floor to get at it from the top _________________ Stefan

Amen to that. I just did this job with the linkage in the car (gearbox removed) and it was not that fun. Removal of the pin actually wasn't that bad with a medium gear puller, but getting it back in was a bit of a challenge. . .it is a fairly tight interference fit. I ended up holding a 4x4 against the top of the tunnel to brace the shift rod and applied some BFH to get it back in place. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I put a boxed hole back there to get to
& replacen the knuckle it was a pita.. Yea
Royboy2cv Your knuckle is toast most likely
it snaps on and is a plastic molded housing
that is molded into the knuckle housing. Youd
call it a ball snap link not a knuckle sandwich. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na
