|
|
I am going to have to replace the lower door hinge on the drivers side door. It has been replaced before and the welding job was less than adequate so this time it pulled the sheet metal off with it. Short of getting some sheet metal and fabricating a piece to go over the torn area is there any other suggestions?
I had thought I might find a parts car that I could cut out the piece but have found nothing local.

My driver's side looked similar. I had a piece of 1/8" steel backing both the top and bottom hinge points, so I saturated the hinge with weld until it caught the reinforcement. It isn't the prettiest thing (isn't the worst weld I've seen, either) but it works. _________________ proud owner of a 1979 924 Sebring Edition with a 931 trans that looks horrible but somehow runs... |

not much to be done here. 2 options I see are:
1: if you are a half good welder get out the mig and do it correctly. personaly i would find a cut out from another car and use that.
2: fabricate a temp fix that bolts into the good metal and possibly a strip of metal in the inside (or however works well) and bolt the hinge into that strip close to where the original connection was. might take a little thought to get it to work but shouldnt be all that hard??? _________________ 1977 924 2.0 Auto |

I've ordered a new hinge piece since the one that ripped off has been welded on before and even after some grinding I don't like the looks of it. I would like to locate a piece from a parts car to weld in as opposed to trying to fabricate one. Anyone know of any place I might locate one?
If I can't get one from a parts car any suggestions on what gauge metal I should get to fabricate a piece? _________________ -1979 Porsche 924 N/A

Quick Draw is parting out a 77, maybe you could talk him into breaking out the sawzall and cutting out the whole section for you.

should be quite easy to fabricate if you have access to the right tools, but I would still be looking for a cut out if one can be found. just a little tip dont breath in whilst welding as the gal dipped body makes nasty fumes when been welded. Some would say wear a mask but I find it rather hard whilst wearing a welding hood also. _________________ 1977 924 2.0 Auto |

you COULD insert backing plates into the holes and plug weld them in. then you only need to grind the backs of the hinge plate and plug/butt weld that in, too.
Thing is it's very hard to access the back of the bottom hole from the back. _________________ proud owner of a 1979 924 Sebring Edition with a 931 trans that looks horrible but somehow runs... |

My Turbo had a similar issue. To fix, I took it to a local body guy who is a much better welder than I am and weld a plate to the support behind the bracket, drill out the old weld in the bracket and weld it to the plate/support. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - sold

Could you post a photo of the repair? (or even before/after)?
Thanks!
This is what mine looks like (not yet repaired, not yet falling off):
