Upgraded dizzy? Is there one? Should I replace with stock?

I need to replace my distributor (ignition, not fuel). It was the cause of my hesitation/surging that I noticed on the maiden voyage last week. Someone had installed a longer screw where the vacuum advance mounts, which was too long and jambed/gouged it's way into the magnets/weights area and wouldn't allow any advance/retard at all.

Of course once I found shards of magnets all around inside, I got a little pissed off and ***MAY*** have been a little rougher than I needed to be taking the dizzy apart the rest of the way. Let's just say a few of the parts are now bent. Luckily most are salvageable if need be.

So, used stock dizzy from salvage yards range from $70-$125 around here. Is there anything better out there for me that I should be looking at? How do I know S1 from S2 here?

S2 distributor has nothing inside - no advance/retard mechanisms, and no spark generator. There's only the shaft and rotor. This makes S1 and S2 real easy to tell apart, and obviously they're not interchangable.

Yes, replace with an S1 stock.

S1 has an oval throttle body and S2 has a round throttle body.

Get a stock standrd working dizzy, anything else will have the wrong advance curve on it. You already have electronic ignition so no pugrade there either.

That seems alot for a dizzy, I paid £20 last time (~$30?)

Finding the right ign dizzy can be a little challenging, especially for the 931...

So question, could he take the weights from his damaged item, and put them in a similar vintage NA unit with vac advance in order to get the correct curve? Or is it more complicated than that?

Don't see why not. Depends on how broken it is...

An old school tuning shop would be able to sort almost any dizzy that fits in the head. If you can find one with a dizzy curve machine.

Dan, I've thought about it some more and I think I'll get one from an 80 turbo to rebuild instead of recurving the NA one as we discussed in PM's. There are several listed in salvage search engines from 80 turbo motors, so I should be good there. Thanks for the input everyone.

No worries, that's what I'd do too.

FWIW, these distributors do not have a Porsche part number imprinted on them, so the PET numbers will be useless to you for verification that you have the correct part. I don't recall off the top of my head what the part number is for the S1, but it will be 237 003 xxx, e.g. the last triplet for a US 931 S2 is 013. The S1 should be something lower than that IIRC.

Take a look at the housing on your damaged item and make sure you match it to that. Meanwhile, I'll see if I can dig up the right number for verification purposes.

Anything with the name "Porsche" on it is more expensive here in the US. Not to mention that the 80 turbo was a rather rare vehicle over here and ka-ching goes the wallet to pay for it.

Thanks Dan. I verified that it does indeed have vacuum advance and came off of a turbo 80 model, so hopefully I'll be good. I'll be better than I am now anyway.
