What I did was, as mentioned, pack with vaseline to get it to prime. You can't spin it separately like a Chebbie since it's powered by the crank. You must crank the engine over. Keep the spark plugs out to make it easy on the starter, and crank for short intervals (with a suitable cooling period inbetween to minimize the stress on the starter) until you see pressure at the gauge. Then you can reinstall plugs and wires and try to get it started.
It will take forever to get oil pressure. Don't give up or get frustrated.

why not have the engine on the engine stand have the oil in it and the vasiline, then hook an impact gun up to the crank and turn the crank around for about 5 min it will get the oil preasure up but make sure the plugs are removed so it can turn easier

I always fill the oil galleys, the oil cooler and lines, and the oil filter.
I also use vaseline in the pump.
Then I crank without the plugs until I see oil being sprayed on the cam. |

Yea-gotcha,I packed it then set it on the pins and cranked it over awhile by the nut to see what would happen. then I used a screwdrivwer and stick to pack it in real good I didnt take off the back cover held on with I think six phillups srcews but I did take out the pressure spring and pack that hole. on the back I packed what looked like the outlet or inlet to the block.
Also before I seal it up with the pan shall I or should I cover the crank journals with grease before I set it on the bearings and put on the caps and should I do the same to the rod bearings grease them up. Not with a long lasting lithium just a all purpose grease.[ This Message was edited by: Joes924 on 2002-09-06 08:40 ]

I would use assembly lube on the mains, rod bearings and cam bearings, it comes in a large toothpaste tube.
I always dip pistons in a can of oil (sink 'em) before installation. |
