|

| So... like many other 924s out there, previously owned by kids who have no idea what they're doing (but think that they do), mine has had the stereo torn out and the wiring terribly Mickey-Moused. I'd like to replace it with a CD receiver, preferably Kenwood or Alpine, because I've been rather impressed by their units in the past. Seeing as how it's already a cramped space, I was curious as to what the rest of the 924 community was using in terms of receivers and speakers. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! |

What year 924 do you have? I'm pretty sure the early ones only a single speaker (mounted on the dash) for the front channel. That might affect what you end up getting.

I've got a '77, and it's got the front-channel in-dash speaker, and speakers located on either side in the rear. The front speaker, being some 32 years old, was mummified and crumbled at my touch, while the wiring will all need to be re-routed. Haven't taken out the rear panels, but I'm sure those speakers are in a similar state of disarray.

That's what I have. I've been playing with the idea of getting a couple of really smaller speakers and fab'ing up a mount for them in that front panel. I'm not sure if the sound quality will be there with such tiny speaker, I think it's worth a go so I can get a true left and right channel up front.
As for receivers, I haven't done much research yet. My problem with a lot of the real modern radios is they are so flashy and bright and, to me, look a little out of place in the car. I'll be very interested to see what you decide.

I agree with you there-- a lot of the modern receivers look like they belong on the command bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise. I like things clean and simple, and I've entertained the idea of one of those flip-down units, where all the controls are hidden when not in use. I like the idea of your two speaker in-dash system. At one point I had considered putting tweeters in my door, but can't bring myself to cut into my brand new panels. |

Yeah, I'm trying not to modify the car in anyway I can't reverse if I had too. My idea is to maybe try a duel layer mount for the center area. Put a larger mid range in the middle towards the back the float two tweeter sized speakers in front, one facing the driver and one facing the passenger. All this could just be pie in the sky dreaming, I haven't really gotten in there yet to figure out what can and can't be done. It's become my "When I get the 924 running again I'll mess with this" project.

I bought a Kenwood in 2001. It was the only cassette player they still sold.
I would now consider buying a second hand one with a fixed front, saves so much time locating the front panel in the house...
And with mechanical pre-sets, so you can disconnect the batterywithout having to tune them again. |

the bigger problem with doing a center speaker is getting proper imaging out of it. How do you plan to control it? just wiring it up in stereo up there won't do what your looking for. There are a few JVC headunits that do have a center channel out, and there are some control boxes that do the mixing for you as well. Audio control made one IIRC.
Edit: this post was made assuming that you have door speakers as well, but if you don't then you can do a pair up in the center location with no problems... lol i'm over thinking it.
BTW if you guys want to get some bigger door speakers with no cutting look for some q-forms. I put 5 1/4's in the doors with no cutting of the panels, and could go up to 6 1/2"s. You can see them on the upper left of this photo (it was originally met as a pic of my subs so bear with me there)

Yeah, I have been thinking about that. I want to try something, without getting too expensive. I also want to keep everything stock looking. Even without the imaging I'm hoping it would be better then just throwing a single speaker in there. I have a long time till I get to that project so I'll have to think it out. Anyone have any ideas?
