Pretty sure Rasta's right. The two big mofo's at the front of the torsion carrier that bolt onto the frame (one per side). And then two each per side that bolt the upper torsion carrier mounts to the inside of the wheel wells. IIRC.
Helps to have lots of penetrating oil, a few jackstands, one or more floor jacks, a helper or two, and a BFPB (big f-ing pry bar). The biggest problem I've encountered on the multiple cars that I've removed suspensions from is that those two big torsion carrier bolts sometimes fuse to the bushing sleeves, making it impossible to remove them. The only reliable solution I've found is to break off the nuts, and then pry the mount parts open enough that you can force the torsion carrier end out using the aforementioned BFPB. Some heat might help, but good luck with that if they're frozen together. If that happens to you, you'll be looking at having to replace the bushings, and you'll have a lot of fun getting them out of the torsion carrier. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

My heart is with Rasta, my head is with ideola.
I can supply BFPBs, penetrating oils and various lubes for unsticking stuff. After lying under the car looking up (familiar now) I figured a 6-bolt solution. would be key. I don't want to take off the control arms or swingarms, but I will have to get the brake hoses and parking brake cables detached.
What I'm going to do is put the torsion bar carrier/tube from the '79 in and upgrade it to 5-bolt. I need to swap the carriers because the snailshell won't mate with the Audi tranny mounts.

You're right about disconnecting the hardlines and hand brake cable, neglected to mention those.
But in your situation (i.e. sticking with the snailshell), unless you can find a second snailshell torsion carrier, you don't really have much of an option. The ideal situation, of course, is to build a second complete suspension setup using all of the five lug stuff, prep it on the bench and then swap it in. Wow, I musta got lucky. When I did Rob's car, every bolt came loose easily, looked fine, and the whole assembly sorta softy plopped into the grass after a bit of low-drama prying.

I had that happen too, but only on one car. All the other ones were a royal PITA. Sorry to be so pessimistic, Slam, but just trying to prepare you for the worst...hopefully, yours will be like Rastas! I think maybe we all have days when ours are like Rasta's.
What I'm up to is this, in broad strokes. Take the snail and the rear carrier out of the 79 924 and graft onto them the rear control arms (or however much is necessary - probably just backing plates and such) from the 931, which will give me a snail setup with 5-bolt. That way I don't have to backdate the brake lines and whatnot.
This is in preparation for resurrecting the 931, although in what form I know not. I've got a good bottom end (just ask my wife) and a good turbo top end. Maybe I'm looking at a hybrid turbo car - 931 without the evil DITC gadgetry.

My torsion bar carrier just dropped out too, and the weather here is shocking most of the year!
If you can get the main bolts to turn then I would put a sawblade between the mount and the bush and saw the bolts off. I would not be keen on bending those hefty brackets. As above, build it up on the deck and pop it all back. Personally I'd change all the hardlines while I'm there, much easier to do it now and it's not hard!
Lifting it back in is a bit of a pain as its a very good fit and must go up perfetly square or it will jam, BTDT. _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...
