|

Hello all. First time posting to your fine board, thanks in advance for reading.
My main question is - What is the best route or method for getting some wiring snaked from the stereo receiver back to the hatch/cargo area?
Now allow me to run my plan past you, comments welcome. My 924 has got the 3 speaker setup(one in center of dash and one either side of rear seats. I am planning to use component speakers in the rear with the separate tweeters mounted up front. I really want to fill in the sound up front more though so plan to use center dash location. In order for this to sound right I am going to use a DVD receiver(no screen) which has 5 channel pre-outs. This will give me a center channel.
The pre outs will run to a 4 channel amp of which only 3 channels will be used. I suppose I could throw a sub off the 4th channel at some point if I feel it necessary.
So how's that sound? I have seen some discussion on how to use the dash speaker with a modern sound system and this is the best way I can think of.
Ahh, I just remembered I do have another question. What is the best way to replace the rear speakers(and what fits? size and depth-wise)? I made a trial run at the passenger side speaker and ended up reassembling everything before I destroyed something. While I was in there it really seemed to me that either I was going to hopelessly destroy the vinyl or never be able to get said vinyl back under the rubber rear window seal. I am considering just cutting into the perforated portion and surface mounting my new speakers rather than putting them in the factory location behind the panel. Surface mounting should also give me some additional depth as well. Do you think the cardboard or whatever that panel is made from could support the new speaker?
Thanks,
Justin |

Well, firstly welcome to the forum Justin. I see you're from Wisconsin. I'm from Medford/Eau Claire, WI. It's nice to see more of us on here!
Next, when I ran wires from the front of the car to the back, I pulled up the trim by the door and ran it through there under the carpet(there are some existing wires there also. You may/should split the power wire from the rest of the wires between the passenger side and the driver side so you don't get any feed back.
As for the speaker size in the rear, I *think* you can use 6x9s under there, but you should do a search to confirm or deny that. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

The OE speaker size back there is 4x6 oval, but I've a vague recollection of someone putting 6x9s there - then again some metal cutting may have been required. I fit 4x6 plate speakers there with no complications (they're more of a rectangular shape). Speakers generally need to be firmly mounted to something solid for optimum sound quality, so I'd have to rate hardboard-panel-only mounting as "less than wonderful". -But once you have the panel cut open, you should find yourself with access to get the mounting screws into the metal behind the panels. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. Yeah I ran wires from front to back under the door trims - only real (tidy )option. Agree with flosho that you should keep power and audio wires separate to avoid unwanted buzzes and whines. Where were you planning putting the amp?
With regard to tweeters I thought they would be best placed somewhere near the bass speaker to retain balance between the two. I have two tweeters screwed into the door card just in front of the window switches and 4x6 speakers in the doors
You don't have speaker holes/screw holes in the doors?
I don't have the centre speaker in my car so couldn't comment on that - I've never had one - I use the nut behind the mounting space as an extra ground point for my centre console gauges
Might want to think about how you can balance the sound between the various speakers as well. The centre speaker I'd imagine is mono so may detract from the 2 side speakers when talking about a sound balance - dunno might have made that up as I went along... _________________ 1983 924 NA

I think in a perfect world the tweeters would be nearer the matching woofers in a component system(I am definately no expert here). I popped off the door skin on the passenger side though and while there is a nice round opening which looks custom made for a speaker the motor for the power windows juts out into it making speaker placement impossible. Part of why I want to retain the front dash speaker is to compensate for the lack of mid-frequency up front.
The balancing of the center dash speaker had me concerned as well. I have no need to play DVD's in the car and probably never will but what the DVD receiver gets me is 5.1 channel pre-outs. I will ignore(for now)the rear channels piping the front left/right audio to the component speakers(woofers behind seats and tweeters up front) and the center channel will be directed to the center dash speaker. The receiver I am looking at is capable of Dolby pro logic II which should give me a '3 channel stereo' option allowing the center channel to fit in with the left and right audio rather than be comprised of only the left audio or the right audio.
Thanks for the tips so far!

PORSCHEV has posted more than once about a slick technique for gaining access to the rear speaker locations. Searching for posts by him should reveal fruit.
It involves popping out the rear quarter windows, so you may try searching for that too.
Since the search here is less-than-optimal, you can try searching with google restricting results to this site. . . _________________ 78 924 NA

I found a post where he details the process http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=23749 (Thanks!). I will have to take a closer look. Honestly it scares me a bit but I would prefer a factory LOOK rather than a grill slapped over whatever hole I end up with.
Thanks,
