I'm hoping for some suggestions from the boards learned members here...

My other halves 1986 924 (UK spec) dropped a little surprise this morning when she set off for work.

When she switched on the lights the lights popped up, sidelights and dash etc lit up but no dipped beam. The tail lights work fine, the main beam flash works but doesn't lock 'on'.

The earths at the headlamp end are patent, there are no blown fuses (that I can find).

I've rigged a bypass circuit so the headlamps light when the sidelights power up, the bulbs are working fine. When bypassed the main beam still won't lock on.

HELP!

Top of my head? Fuses 1,2,3,4 on main fuse block. Indicator/hi-lo beam switch-stalk. Is the car an S or regular 924? The former's hi-lo beam switching is on the steering column. Not sure about late latter but my wife's 77 has relays for the hi-lo.

HTH

I'm sure someone who knows much more than me will chime in.

Hi,

Thanks for the response, it's a straight 2.0 924 the fuses all appear ok. The hi-lo switch appears to be doing it's job in terms of making the high beam flash.

How about the connector to the column switch? IIRC, the Euro 924 does have a relay Haynes calls a changeover relay. Not sure exactly what its role is, though.

No relay on mine- just uses the switch.
I would say the switch is fubar.

If you mean the main light switch then that's where I'm going too, I've had it out of the dash and it's quite a complex beast. I guess the only way to know for sure is to fit another switch.

All I've got to do now is find one.......

This link may help if the car's similar to an early 944 (my Euro 924 is almost exactly the same).

Hmmm...that may be just an annoying teaser. The wiring diagrams are on the PelicanParts website. Have a look there.

I meant the changeover switch on the column but I'd chase the circuit from the dash switch.

Rich,

I'm chasing the very same problem on my 87-924S (US). There is no relay on this year. I'm not getting volts to the fuses. I pulled the switch and checked it, and it checked out OK. I also replaced my column switch - still the same thing.

Anyone solved this one before?

TIA,

I'm still stuck, awaiting a replacement switch at the moment.

The later cars don't use a relay? How strange. On my car you pull the lever to put the main beam on and then pull it again in the same direction to turn the main beam off again. There's no way of making the main beam flash as such, just on/off. Even when the relay's broken (as it is again now) holding the lever makes the main beam come on, it just won't stay on.

Mine has no lighting relay for the dipped lights, but there is one for the main beam.

I've just replaced the main light switch (the one with the instrument dimmer combined into it) and I now have lights again!

Thanks for all the suggestions and help.
