|
|
Im undecided as to how to strip the existing paint before a respray.
The car has in the past had two full resprays so paint is quite thick..and i found it can chip off in some spots.
I dont want to remove the galvanised coating
My options are
1) paint stripper ( will it remove the galvanizing aswell????)
2) orbital grinding to bare metal( will probably remove alot of galvanizing)
3) orbital sanding to remove a few layers of the paint.
Bead/sand.etc blasting isnt an option
Any ideas? _________________ 1979 NA

blast it with walnut shell or plastic bead? I know you said it isn't an option ... but why not? heh.

well, if you already have the compressor you have the biggest most expensive part. Buy a small siphon feed sandblaster(30 bucks maybe?) and put the tube in a container of media, press the trigger. Just need dry air, and media. Biggest problems are, the mess it makes (gets everywhere) and the cost of media (if you control the mess, you can sweep it up and reuse it) It will take quite awhile, took my buddy about 20 minutes today to blast off his intake manifold in my shop. So for a whole car, a couple weekends of work? If you use walnut shell, or plastic bead, it should just remove the paint, not the metal at all. Since the metal is harder than the media your using. If your really interested in it I'd probably recommend building a pressure assist blaster. I can email you some plans for one, it would make the job much easier overall, and you can use a much lower pressure (meaning you will be less likely to damage the galvanization)

Wet sand off just the paint, leave the primer. All you need is sandpaper and some friends and a few bottles of Bundy. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Bundy is like air and sex, you don't think much about it unless you're not getting any! _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

| If you want to take it back to bare galved metal a heat gun and blunt scraper is effective but slow. With practice and patience it could be scraped off to the original primer. |

alan funny thing is i was actually looking into some industrial warehouse space last night!.. just confirming $50 sqm/pa ?
is that 1200 sq/m a minimum amount..ie would we need to lease it all?
i needed some space to do
1) car work
2) wave tank testing for a engineering project im working on
What do you think of setting up a single spray booth in an industrial shed...charge around $350 to $500 for use...for a 6 to8 hr period as brisbane has none of these.. that way rent could pay off itself! _________________ 1979 NA

Hiya Scorp. Bare metalled my toofah some years back with paint stripper. Did a great job, and does NOT remove galvanising unless you are injudicious with the paint scraper.
Basically i did a section at a time - half a bonnet, then the other half and so on. Liberally coat with paint stripper (must be good quality, buy from auto paint wholesalers) and wait while it bubbles. Then simply scrape off and wipe mess on old newspapers. If paint is really thick then you may need several coats, but unlikely if you spend the dollars on good quality stripper. Oh and wear disposable gloves - the stripper bites.
Wipe over with wetted rag several times to neutalise stripper and finish with thinners or metho.
Took me less than a day to do whole car, including inside the door jambs.
Cheers Pete |
