my '78 NA makes noise from the clutch housing when I depress the clutch but once it is out it stops. I've been told that it is the throw out bearing and I just wanted to double check with you all. I was also told that I should be able to get away with driving it for another month or so until I have time to take everything down and get to it. While I am in there I am just going to replace everything: Clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and pilot bearing. Is there anything else that I am missing? I got the cross references from the FAQ and was wondering if anyone has used them and if there was anything I needed to look out for when using them. Clutch from a '80-'83 Audi 4000, Presssure Plate Audi 100 LS 75-77 or Audi 4000, Release bearing from Audi 100LS (Is this the throw out bearing?). Thank you for your comments.

Looking at some comparisons of the parts I need it looks like the Audi 4000 clutch is 200mm while the 924 clutch is 215mm, will this cause a problem? The pressure plate for the Audi 100LS is the same as the one for the 924 but the one from the Audi 4000 is 200mm vs the 924's 215mm does it make a difference which one I use?
Thanks

Hey, I have a throw out bearing for my 82 that I never even opened (ended up getting a whole new clutch). If you want it, just say so and I'll send it to you . |

Thanks for the offer Cathy but I'll probably just end up ordering it all at the same time with all the rest of the clutch parts since it isn't all that expensive. Right now what I really need to know is if there will be any problems with the the parts that I am going to install since they are not the exact same parts that were originally in the 924. I also need to know if I will need any special tools. Please post back if you know anything, I am going to be ordering these parts Monday afternoon and doing the work Next weekend so please let me know if you know anything.
Thanks |

Sounds like the pilot bearing to me. If your grinding sound occurs exactly in sync with the clutch being pressed, it would be your throwout bearing. If it takes a split second for the grinding sound to wind up, it is the pilot bearing grinding as the flywheel and drive shaft are changing speeds with respect to eachother. I didn't need any special clutch centering tools, but it helped right at the end for somebody to press in the clutch while I slid the drive shaft in (so the clutch disk was free to move around). The only special tool (other than a 15, 17, and 19 mm sockets) is a 12 point CV joint bolt bit (can't remember what size, but it is the same as a VW beatle/bus).

So does anyone know of any conflicts with using a 200mm clutch with a 215mm pressure plate? or just using a 200mm clutch and pressure plate? The 924 clutch and pressure plate are both 215mm. Also can someone look into what size the cv joint bolts are? I'm 200 miles away from my car and I have no way of seeing it until i need to do the work and I would like to have everything together when i start since i only have 2 days to do it in. Please post back ASAP if you have any comments on the clutch/ pressure plate as I am going to order them later this afternoon.
Thanks

| I agree that it sounds like the pilot bearing. Replacing this could be either easy or hell on earth, depending on method and luck. Mine was hell. Who else has done this and has had better luck? Let's help this guy! |

| Either way no matter what bearing it is I'm just going to go ahead and change everything out since I'm in there and I don't feel like doing the work again in a few months. |

| I totally agree with doing everything at once. This is not a fun task. You do not want to do this again anytime soon. |

| What is a pilot bearing housing and what are the chances that I'll need it? The pilot bearing is about $4 and the bearing with the housing is $72. I don't know which bearing is dying as of now but the car ran about 5 miles after I heard noise and it is now on my driveway so I doubt I could have done much if any damage to anything. |
