Recently picked up a replacement hatch and the black on the trim has faded and scratched off in places. Appears to be a single thin coat of black paint directly over the stainless steel. Thinking about sanding it all off and repainting with an etch primer with black acrylic on top (because I have some).

Does anyone know what the factory uses or have any better suggestions what I can use to refinish it?

If you have the paint..might as well use it. The factory used a shine flatner to make it a semi gloss.

WTF is a shine flatner? Paint additive?

Appreciate your expertise Porschev. Is there anything better I could use, only really want to do it once?

When you go to a body paint shop ask them to dull the paint.

I used a spray can of semi flat black paint.

I rattle canned mine as well with flat black and it's held up pretty well. The bigger challenge is the trim around the windshield and the door handles...the rattle can stuff just doesn't hold up as well to abuse from small flying debris.

The windshield trim is easily removed and I had that powdercoated. Will do the doorhandles too in the next batch. Hatch trim however is an absolute PITA to remove let alone replace so will just mask it off and paint it.

Thanks guys.

After seeing the poor durability of the paint on the door handles and windshield trim, I am also planning to have mine powder coated (for the UWB project).

I think you'll be happy with painting the hatch trim. Mine has held up very well.

I would actually rattle can my own. There is a great product here called "black satin" that does a great job.

Ring around mate and dont mention Porsche.
Most places have a minimum charge, $50 or so and for that can get a box of small parts done if you clean them yourself back to bare metal. Black is common so if youre not in a rush tell them to include yours next run. Colour changes cost more but thats their cream.
