I got another sudden burst of energy today and changed the engine oil. Car said, "Thanks... douche bag. Now how about some paint. We don't see you walking around for 5+ years in the same tattered coat. With a few new coats of polyurethane I could be turning some heads."

Redline..... Simply awesome. I will never put in regular gear oil.

My trans was whining and after running down the road for about 15 minutes, it would start sounding like someone was rubbing sandpaper on the gears.

Turns out that the person I bought it from never changed the gear oil at all; it was a gloppy, dirty/gritty mess. I'm lucky a 130,000 mi transmission didn't go bye-bye.

After redline, the gears shift very smooth, and no more whining or sandpaper sounds. I think after a few hundred miles, it will get even better.

My gearboxes' drain plug had a piece of magnet epoxied to it to grab pieces of metal. Not sure if they were made that way - it was half falling out, but still doing its' job. Found a few tiny bits of metal on it. It was the soft kind of magnet stuff that removable magnetic signs are made of. I pried and scraped it out and epoxied in a new piece. -Just a thought, something to do while the drain plug is out. The fill plug didn't have a magnet, but had a round recess that I thought might be for one. The drain plug didn't have the recess - maybe plugs were reversed and a PO or mechanic glued that magnet in. Whatever...

Smoothie, I think if your oil has GL-4 and 5 ratings it is ok. Not sure but 5 is for rear wheel differentials. Since it also says 4 on the bottle your alright.

Redline. I use stock gear oil, but I've heard very good things from reputable guys about Redline.

Where do you get it in Canada?

hey guys,
there is a factory magnetic plug on the 4spd's (i assume the 5's have it also). it is attached to the round cover plate on the passenger side of the 'box. i pulled mine off and it looked like it had never been cleaned.

no new seals to worry about. you just remove the passenger side cv axle, the flange the axle bolts onto on the tranny and take out the ten or so 13mm bolts that hold the inspection cover on. it's probably recommended to clean this magnet everytime the trans oil is changed in some tech book somewhere...
