Update, this fellow's insurance carrier paid for the car, as it was totalled during "driver's education!"

That looks a lot like my GTI. I'm glad to hear his insurance paid for it!

Oh dear indeed...
Why do US tracks seem to love that concrete barrier armco??? Whats wrong with a bit of run off and some gravel?? Seems all the rage over there. Can't help when you do take a trip into the scenery.
oh, and remember boys and girls, using the middle pedal does not make you a woofter!!

That area was actually the straight, with a "cone chicane," so the track design itself isn't to blame.

Rasta,

Not really commenting about the overall track layout. I think our friend was a bit overly optimistic to be tipping into a chichane at those speeds, without setting the car up.
I just seem to notice an awful lot of that concrete barrier stuff on US vids. Must be a nightmare when you make contact.

Indeed. . .we are pretty lucky at PIR, there are generous grass runoffs in most places. . .MOST. . .

Maybe this is the wrong thing to do, but I've been in similar situations at an autocross. If I'm counter-steering (steering away from the wall in the vid) and not getting traction out of the front wheels, I'll spin the wheel around to opposite lock (in the vid's case - steer toward the wall).

9 out of 10 the tail will come all the way around and scrub off enough speed in the process to get some tire traction back. Of course, I've only done it with cones coming at me, not concrete! The worst case would be that you slide backwards into the wall instead of smacking the side.

I think he was going faster than it looked. . .well into 4th gear on a turboed Wabbit!

I think Rasta's correct here and he was motoring faster than it appears in the vid.

I've had a bit of seat time in front drive v-dubs, albeit old school models. Back in the day I used to autocross/DE/race, first a '75 scirocco (the 1.5L, single windshield wiper, powerhouse) and then an '84 rabbit GTI. Both front drivers were fun cars, though they were a bit under-powered, and tended to three wheel it through the corners. I found the situation shown in the vid a tough one to overcome. If I overcooked a corner past the point of mild understeer, it was difficult to get the car to respond to any steering input. It just wanted to keep pushing offline.

Looking back to when I first started out, I remember some of the better/older drivers taking pics of me and my scirocco going through some of the more difficult turns. At that time I was too young/stupid to realize that they were getting video evidence on how not to drive/setup a front driver. Getting the car dialed in helped a bunch, and smoothing out my driving style to carry speed through the corner minimized the problem. If I scrubbed off too much speed in the corner, the cars didn't have enough power to make up ground out of the corner.

I don't know if this is necessarily right or wrong. I guess the situation would dictate what would be a good strategy. All I can say is that I would have a hard time steering my front end toward a wall that is coming up fast! The few times that I had the car take me for a ride in close quarters, I only had time to go two feet in and hang on. I'm sure there are better drivers out there who could comment further.

Cheers, Brian
