Does anyone know of any really good product for bringing back paint color or removing minor scratches? I know "Malco of Ohio" is a really good one, but I don't know where or how to get it, so it would be really nice if I could just find one at Auto Zone or something like that, but most of that stuff doesn't do a darn thing for me. Any suggestions?

Micro glaze polish. It is a mild abrasive and you could get out minor scratches and swirl marks. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Hmm, that might work, I dunno tho, see what happend was, the person that had the it before I did was painting something near the car and got some over-spray on it, well when I got the car my dad took some paint thinner and some steel-wool to take the over-spray off, but it scratched it up a little, and being the car is 20 years old the paint is a little dull anyways, and I don't have the money for a paint job so I'm going for the next best thing.

I've had good results with Meguiars products.
Looks, like Auto Zone sells meguiars _________________ 1982 Porsche 924 na My 924 blog

Hard to tell without seeing a closeup picture of the paint. But if you have made scratches that go all the way down to the primer, then there is no "miracle" product that will restore your paint.
But if you have shallow scratches/swirls in the clearcoat or even into the basepaint, but not all the way down to the primer, then the Scratch-X can save your paint.
On "Dull paint" you will get "miracle" results. But I recomend to buy a polishing machine, unless you consider polishing a nice way of training your arms _________________ 1982 Porsche 924 na My 924 blog

Well, it's not that deep, probably just clear coat deap, so it might do some good, but I've never had any luck with scratch-x on former cars I've had, but maybe I just don't know how to use it. _________________ 87' 924S non-sunroof (Red) 45K miles

what do you think i could do to get rid of this dull glaze on my passsenger door
i think a previous owner must have fixed the door and resprayed it with something bad. but i have no idea here are some close ups
also do you know how to get off the black side molding. the outer rubber part has already come off on the front but i dont know how to get off the stuff left over

The door was obviously repaired in the upper section and repainted with a low quality enamel. Get yourself some quality micro fine compound. I swear by 3M products, but have also had good results with Farcla.
For Druman....The best solution for yours would be to get a coarse buffing compund and go over thecar first..then the micro fine. If you have scratches that are deeper, spot sand with 2000 grit wet paper. Then buff. You will need an 8 inch varible speed buffer and the proper buff pads. Most supplier can get you set up. Don't use the old wool pads..they do more harm then good.
The coarse compund uses a stiffer foam pad that you use along with water as you buff. You then clean the area for the micro fine, and go to the soft foam pad and buff to high gloss shine. _________________ 1976 924

Thanks Porschev, If I ever get the matierials I'll give that a shot. A guy I know used a little bit of paint cleaner one time on a small spot on the car and it made it look really good, but I dunno if that would be good enough or not. _________________ 87' 924S non-sunroof (Red) 45K miles

It's exposure to sunshine that causes cheap paint to go dull and fade, particularly red colours.
Is there a lot of sunshine in California? If so, my advise is move away! _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

Best is to compound it a bit and then use a polish.
If you do not want to compound it Mothers Gold has a nice product that worked great on two of my cars. Not sure they were nearly as bad as yours but it hid the heavy swirls left from the body shop who did my pain job. Yes he cut the clear to hard and left some nasty swirl marks. I did not see them when I picked up the car. They did not show until after what ever polish he used wore off.
Oh and on the rubber left over from the adhesive strip use a heat gun or hair dryer. Then carefully peal it off... with out burning yourself.

Red is a pita to keep shiny, but you can bring it back with some elbow grease. more often than not, the problem with red is that oxidizes due to lack of uv protection. you dont "have" to use a orbital polisher, but it will help allot, and doing it by hand is exhausting and sometimes, inconsistant. you can find them fairly cheap, under $50 new, and sometimes you can get for $5 or $10 used if you look around. any of the major brand products will work, I prefer 3m compound and polishes, and Maguires waxes at the moment. fairly low cost products that give good results if you work at it.
heres a link that has some basics, its a "buy me" type site, but the basics are there, and you can find tons of more detailed info using your favorite web search engine. http://www.properautocare.com/usdualpol1.html
if the compound/polish/wax method doesnt give the results you want, you may have to respray (but i doubt you'll have to go that far) and it is possible to get great results using shaker cans if your careful enough, prep correctly, and do your homework first. _________________ Eric

My paint was a little dull and I got a Maguires 3 step wax/paint cleaner. IT had a paint cleaner, polish and then wax and I was impressed with the results but this was almost a year ago and some parts of the car, mostly the roof look like they could use it again. _________________ 87 924S |
