got my engine apart today and found that *all* the intake lifters were pitted on the top - the front two were the worst and the back two were hardly touched. what might cause this? i should replace 'em right? everything else looks fine but we haven't measured the block yet. the pistons also look great - one of them is sparkly clean from a steam cleaning it got courtesy of a blown headgasket?

| the damage is caused by them being hit on the head 1500 times a minute for the last 20 years, yes replace them, less damaged one may be repairable. |

Your pitted cam followers are most probably the result of inadequate lubrication, poor oil change scheduling, and/or poor maintenance.
The Camshaft Oil Tube should be inspected and cleaned everytime the valve cover is off.
Debris from the oil system plugs the holes in the oil Tube, and the cam bobes are deprived of oil. Then, the cam lobes grind the cam followers. Dirty oil leaves contaminants on the tops of the cam followers which causing corrosion on the tops of the cam followers causing pits.
The plastic elbow that connects/seals the Camshaft Oil Tube to the cylinder head should be replaced each time as well. The plastic elbows shrink with age and oil flow that should be delivered to the cam lobes get lost when the plastic elbow get loose, and leak. |

| well to remove the vavles to have them ground or cleaned you have to remove the head, but if you mean to remove the tappets off the top of the valves to clean them just remove the cam make sure you get the journals in the right order when you put it back on but once the cam is off just pull the tappets up and they should come if they dont come with ease grab them with a pair of channel lock pliers and a cloth so you dont damage them even more and they will lift off to be repaired. |
