My hatch shocks have been on the verge of complete death for a while. They hold the hatch up on a hot summer day, but fail completely in cold weather. I've been loath to replace them and watch my hatch glass delaminate from the extra pressure. Are there any alternatives - other than a stick?
Some kind of mechanical prop to replace the struts with that would just ratchet into place and release easily? Someone must have come up with something? I realize that the hatch is pretty d@mn heavy with no struts attached, so maybe just something to supplement the existing struts? _________________ 1980 931S

I have one dead hatch strut (the left side)(that I killed intentionally by drilling to let the gas out)(to keep its' Hulk-like strength from twisting the hatch frame and seperating it from the glass), so I have the dead strut and one o' these <click> "LIFT SUPPORT REPAIR BRACKET"'s from JCWhitney <click again> on the left and a still-good strut on the right side.
Also have been using one on each side in front for the hood. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

The first one is like a stick and gives me images of knocking it out while underneath and getting hit on the back of the cranium.
(daughters trunk is known for this as the springs are weak.)

I have 944 ones on but they have about 4 times the pressur {I have no clue} but they feel much stronger.
Also I think it's the 1997 Jeep TJ's that have the same size shockes. |

Hey Smoothie, those look great! Do you have to put a hand on it to "release" it when you lower the hatch? I'd like something that you just lift the hatch a little and the support drops down, or something... I'd like to use one on each side to keep the hatch straight.
The Summitt kit looks great, but I think I would have to remove the hydraulic shocks entirely, which would make lifting the hatch heavier than I'd like.
Neil - as far as I know, the 924 shocks have been superceded by the 944 shocks. New shocks seem to have a bad reputation of helping the glass to separate from the frame.
I don't understand paying $32 for a "stick" on ebay either  _________________ 1980 931S

Those JCW do-da's are spring loaded, so they prop the hatch opened automatically, but on shutting you have to move them manually. -But there's a screw adjustment that you can use to add some drag and overcome the spring action - so you could have one side operate by spring action, then manually operate the other side on both open and close. In other words, on opening, one side clicks in automatically while you'd manually move the other side. Then on closing, move the non-sprung side manually, it then stays open while you manually move the spring activated one and lower the lid. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. Reminds me of my hood. I had just replaced the struts up front and was working on something--I think the rear cam gasket--so I was well and truly under the hood.
So I lean back and out to stretch and BANG, lower bracket for the left strut just breaks loose from the body and the hood goes crashing down and slams shut. That was a nice little surprise. _________________ 1987 924S: Very much in love with it, even if it's all finnicky |

Actually I have been planning to replace mine as they are not holding up the hatch and was wondering "Do I have to buy a porsche part?"

Smoothie, how were you able to maintain enough clearance between the fuel lines and the hood strut when you close the hood? The fuel lines run along the channel where the strut lays when the hood is closed. _________________ 1981 931 (Concours)

I used to use a length if PVC pipe cut to length to function like what smoothie linked to at JC Whitney. I just popped off the strut on one side and slid it on tot eh strut.
The benefits of the pipe is that it engages itself when you fully open the hatch. No leaning over or holding the hatch with one hand to get it to engage. Then all you do it pop it out and let it close. It is pretty easy. I painted mine with satin black paint to match the interior. |
