ok ive asked this question to a few ppl but ill ask on here since u ppl are experts

i have an 87 924S

ok for some odd reasons along time ago

my radiator fan would stay on till the battery went dead.....

i heard it was a radiator fan switch which cost like 30 dollars plus shipping

I decided to do it myself since im mechanically inclined then i ran into a problem, im not sure if the ones on the 924S are from a 1st Gen 944 83-85/1 or the 2nd Gen 85/2-91 is it a 2 prong or 3 prong

well eventually i got tired of guessing so it juts stopped comming on after i kept on unplugging the battery it would just stay off, and my car would go over normal operating temp (3rd bar) so i just turned on the AC and i guess it would force the switch on.... but the car would idle at 2,000 rpms after driving for about 15 mins

last night b4 i ran to the grocery store i heard the fan on again, so i decided to drive that to the store with the AC off, and it ran just fine, never went over normal operating temperature and it idled just fine after running it for 30 mins, when i turned the car off the fan did not come on,

seriously what is the problem, the fan switch or the relay for it, the relay is $150 so plz help me decided what the problem is...

i aprreciate it in advance.

If you're mechanically inclined, pop the hood and take a look. It's on the upper part of the radiator, off to the side. It got either two or three wires running to it. Count the wires. They're the only wires that run to the radiator.

You really want to replace this instead of guessing. If it's a two wire, they're all over ebay for about $10 plus shipping. It's a widely used part so most Advance, Pep Boys, etc are going to carry it.

If you want to check if the switch is at fault, warm up the engine and leave the AC off. If the fans don't come on, remove the wires and short them across. If the fans come on, it's the switch.

When you buy a new switch, you might want to opt for the lower temp one. That, along w/a lower temp t-stat will keep your engine cooler. But you really need to get this fixed. Sucks to blow up $3,000 worth of engine for a $30 part.

All US 924S Porsches that I have owned, had 2 pole switches.

There are two wires, one goes to ground, the other to the relay.

All the switch does is to provide a ground for the field coil of the relay, so any short to ground in the wiring between the relay and the switch will cause the fans to run.
