I have to replace the speedo cable as it has broken somewhere, i have no idea where to start, has anyone else done this who could give me some pointers?

Bonnet/Hood Pins, the release cable has gone so i am going to fit some pins, not too sure where to fit them though, has anyone else fitted them if so where or where would you recomend putting them?

The best places to check the speedo cable are at either end; one where it connects to the speedo head and the other inside the nearside hub cap. Most probably one or other of these ends has come loose, rather than an actual break in the cable.

Bonnet pins?!! On a Porsche?!! Are you sure?!! Replace the cable!

+1 for what mike924 said. It may also help to know (if you don't already) that the speed sensor is attached to the front wheel so jacking up the front and spinning the wheel can help to trace the problem.

the cable has broken near the actual speedo, i can actually remove part of the cable from the speedo end.

I am fitting bonnet pins because it is not the actualy cable that has broken, the spring and retaining bolt has broken inside the secureing mechanism, this you have no access to therefore i cannot fix it, the only choice i can see is bonnet pins.

There is a place in the UK where they can make up any speedo cable to any specification (standard or custom) for quite reasonable money. They advertise in Practical Classics. I'll look them up for you when I get home.

So the latch is broken? Can't you just replace the broken components? Surely there's a VW breaker not far away... they're certainly nothing special!

Just say NO - to rice!!!

I second what Vaughn said, if the spring inside the release mechanism in the hood is broken, replace the whole mechanism with a good used one. That isn't exactly a rare part. If you just fit hood pins you will become the "Previous Owner" or "PO" everyone here complains about. Trust me, you don't want to become that person.

Ive put in 2 cables the first one wasn't sealed up good enough
so the cable rusted and broke, after that the one I put in
got
a kink from installation and it ended up breaking too.. I
tried to fit a later model cable too. It has 2 cables a long
& a short & a box that both cables go into in between the wheel
& the back of the speedo. Think it came out of a 924S.

Sorry, forgot to look at the weekend! My mind was on preparing the car for it's MoT this morning... If things go smoothly, I'll look up the info tonight.

OK, despite the disappointment of my car failing the MoT (cracked anti-roll bar mount), I still remembered to look up the details of the speedo cable people:

Mine has broken in the same place twice. Just go out and buy a speedo cable for a VW Beatle or Old Karmann Ghia, it is the same thing. Regular Porsche price on the item was just under 100 dollars. The Beatle cable you can buy on E Bay for about 15. Good luck.

it's the lower part of the catch, the part fitted to the slam pannel. I have fitted bonnet pins now, it's an easy option, i can always fix the problem later on and fit a new bonnet.
