I was talking to guy who owned a 924 track car out at Thunderhill Raceway, during a PCA time trials. And he said something about his car that has stuck in the back of my mind ever since.
When talking about the snail shell tranny in his car. He said that the gear sets "Are the same as in a 915 transmission."
The 915 was used in the 911 from '72 through (I think) '87. I am assuming he had a G31 and I don't think he was talking about 924 016 snail shell trany. If that is so then the gear sets dog teeth may be cheaper than what we have been led to believe.
I do know if you go to the Windward Performance website page they state that the G31 Porcshe 5 speed is stronger than the Audi unit. I have never bothered to ask them what the basic for that claim is, but if you look at the internals of the G31 you will notice that it's a heafty transmission. The problem is that most of them suffer from that nearly unaccessable shifter linkage coupling. As this coupling gets old and worn out it becomes increasingly harder to make a clean shift, resulting in worn syncho rings and damaged dog teeth. Just my $.02 have a good day.

Well, I'm not buying two trannies for the car. If I decide to replace the snailshell, it will be either with a G31 and 931 TT, or a 951 5 speed.
How hard is it to put LSDs in the snailshells? I need a tranny that can take 250-300hp, and 250-300ftlbs, and the NA torque tube isn't exactly up to that, is it?
The synchro for second is bad, and fourth isn't so good. So if I rebuild the snailshell in the thing, I need to replace the shift linkage, synchro rings, and possibly the dog teeth?
What if the dog teeth are shot? |

Ray, I have those parts. The shift rod is the one with the swivel joint at the tranny end, not the one that fits in the bushing in the front of the car. It's part number 477 711 106. The one that I have is almost brand new, the label from the Porsche parts counter is still on it. E-mail me when you can, I'll give you a good deal.

Diesel:
Do you have both rods with ends
that mate with the trany.
And what would take for them?

Hmmm, can't beat $75CDN.. Does it shift properly, and are the synchros good?
If I replace the snailshell it will be with either a G31, 951 5speed, or 968 6 speed.
If I can get a G31 for cheap, than it'll be a G31. If I can get a 951 tranny for cheap... But for $75, that I will go for. |

I was under the impression it was a tremendous PITA to pull a snailshell... another myth dispelled I guess.
I will see when I can get down there, I don't have a vehicle I can drive currently... |

| Well, I have to head over to the mainland anyways, so I might as well just drop by then. Should be towards the end of the month, but I have to sort it out. I'll email you once I find out. |

The snailshell's designed for racing, of course it's easy to pull. The 4-speed isn't even that bad, but the added length of the late 5-speed makes that a real pain. Too bad it's the best of the lot!

| the one i pulled out of the 80 924 was a breeze i did it by myself in under 30 min and now i know what i am doing if the bolts come easy then it will only take me 15 min to get it out but probably 30-45 min to put it back in, the car didnt have any exhaust in it so that also made it easier |
