I have two questions.

1)What would it cost to put new synchros in a 79 snaishell transmission?

2)What are the factory numbers for the transmissions? I know the 931 snailshell is the G31. Is the 924 snailshell the G24?

What about the Audi boxes?

Geez, I've got a snailshell from the 79 Euro I parted out that I can't get rid of! The thing shifted OK and everything but nobody seems to want it. Well, I take that back, one guy wanted to remove it for free. I told him I'd use it as a mailbox post before I GAVE it away.

It depends on what you are calling a snychro. If you just want new synchronizer rings, they cost about $100 US each, plus installation. That is all you will need if you haven't been grinding the gears too long. If you have been grinding gears, your dog teeth will be shot on the gears you have been grinding, and to the best of my knowledge, they are not available as a seperate unit. So, you have to by new gear sets for the effected gears. The last gear set that I bought cost me $1400.00.

Gears are still good, I think. I'll have good looksee at the dog teeth. I'm trying to decide whether or not to rebuild or replace, whichever is more cost effective. For the prices I'm seeing thrown around here, I could get a 968 tranny.

$100 a piece for the rings? Doesn't sound that bad for total cost.

Thanks for the codes Gohim

Yeah, the synchro rings I got were about $100 each, and yes, the big thing is the condition of the dog teeth.

Okay, what should the dog teeth look like? Where should I see signs of wear?

The dog teeth stick out from the side of the gear and look like a bunch of really tiny piramids. They are about 1/16 of an inch high. If they are worn, the tops of the piramids will be missing.

So I just make sure they are good and pointy? Is it okay if they are slightly rounded, or do they have to sharp?

CBass, buy my snailshell tranny from me! I have no use for it! The housing was cracked when it got pulled (literally) out of the car. Everything was sound with it otherwise... Make me any offer! I am in Minnesota so not too far away from the border
