Greetings All,
In doing research about our newly acquired 924S, I stumbled upon this website. Awesome stuff.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Matt Nischan, and I'm one of the owners of an import race shop near Chicago called Metric MotorWerks. We specialize mostly in Porsche, but we also do VW, Audi, and the occasional Japanese import. But enough about me.
We found this car in WI after a driver from a local True Value whom we know told us that he had seen it on a recent delivery. So, we went out to take a look. The guy who was selling it was only asking $500 bucks, so we figured it might be a little beat up or not run. Well, it didn't run, but more on that later. The body is in awesome condition, just repainted. One wierd thing that a previous owner did, however, was remove the two rear windows and replace them with a body panel. That isn't too terrible though, since those windows would be going lexan. So, all in all, good news on the body.
We put it on our trailer and took it back to the garage to see what the scoop was on the engine. It was bone dry, no oil whatsoever, and no coolant to speak of. So we filled up...and it ran! Very smooth, no readily apparent balance shaft issues or motor mount issues. It does have what sounds like a decent size exhaust leak (very loud ticking). We also figured it could be that pressure hadn't gotten to the lifters yet, or that one might be bad (it only ticks once per revolution).
Having never raced a 924S previously, we figured this would be a good way to get our feet wet for future customers and have some fun with a cheaper car in the process. I have a couple of questions. What is the turbo potential of this engine? Can 300+ whp be had without rebuilding the engine every race? Or would it be smarter (PCA class wise) to put a 2.0 turbo engine in it?
Thanks folks. _________________ Matt Nischan

Well hello there Mr. Nischan, I will say to you, what I have said about 50 times to other people and it's the best advice when it comes to upgrading older Porsches. Here it goes: ahem! "It's always cheaper to buy the car you want than it is to build one and it's always more reliable". I would suggest you buy a 931 > 924 turbo < or perhaps a 944 or 951 > 944 turbo <
With all that I have read and from what I have heard it's very inexpensive to buy a 931 compared to buying a 924 and adding the components needed for the turbo. Others here can go into massive detail about it and one or two will even give you the green light and specs. on what you need to do it but just buying a 931 will be much more wise.
You seem to be able to build the car into a turbo but I would gaurd against that.

| And a general rule of thumb is "bolt-on parts for the 924 produce little hp and torque for the effort and money". |

Well, the thing that we liked about the 924S is that the chassis is lighter than the 944, but you get the same engine. Since we plan on making the turbo system from scratch anyhow, we figured it would be a bit faster on the 924 chassis. _________________ Matt Nischan
