has anyone found a suitable way to modify or replace the rear seat to make it more comfortable? i'm only 6 feet tall and i can't fit in there - and even if i could, those seats are horribly uncomfortable.
any suggestions?

Rear seat size is limited by the frame of the car. So no luck there =(

I read somewhere that the rear seats weren't really intended to be used - though they would be perfectly suited to small children. The reason given for them being there had something to do with taxes or insurance that would be higher at the time for a 2 seater.

I've had as many as 4 people in my 924, although the two in the back were one small person and a kid. I've ridden in the back seat too. Had to open the sunroof to get enough room and my head kept banging on the sunroof frame. Biggest complaint is there is no leg room. If there was a way to move the back seat back about 6 inches...

I remember reading somewhere that the rear seats of the 924 were commonly referred to as "emergency rear seating"

when you think about it, it seems a very appropriate label. I mean why else would you subject someone to cramp themselves in there unless it was an emergency.

I read under my hood that the intended seating capacity was two. I like referring to the back seat as "optional stadium seating."

I suggest you meet only midgets and two will fit in the back and maybe you can more than 6 in the car.

This is the truth. I was in the army in Germany a long time ago and we were invited to a party. Problem we had 4 guys and three girls to fit in a very small car. It was a two cylinder Renault. It is half the size of a VW but. It had wicker seats with the motor in the back as does the VW. Two guys got in the back with two gals on their laps. Their hads were over the pass and drivers seat, I was in the pass seat with my gal on my lap with her legs across the drivers legs and he had to shift between her legs. We made it to the party but we damaged the motor mounts. A deer crossed our path and we all looked up at his belly. You should have heard the screams. Good fun.

It wasn't even that crowded.

There were 2 in the passenger seat and since I folded the rear seat down, 3 laid down on their stomachs in the hatch area.

Was a nice view in the mirror.....

Really it was made to be a car that was sporty for the whole family, that way you, your wife, and your kid(s) could take a ride on a sunday afternoon, or when ever and then in a few years you would sell it and get another car. It was also done that way it could be called a family car, so the the insurance was lower.
