Noo nice guess though. I was donated a
complete cyl. head
with cam lifters and caps everything just bolt
it on. My port and polished
head has made it to the machine shop yet..
the one Id been
running on my car had miss matched cam bearing
caps the lifter noise was getting really loud and I'm
pretty sure i wore out a lobe on the cam cause it
starting miss-en only noticeable on idle at first though
it got worse.. I changed injectors first along with
plugs and even the plug wires.. didn't help.
*This is along post.*
So I got the idea that since I was putting on the
good complete head Id just as well tackle swapping
out the pistons for a set of 81 9 to 1 compression
pistons and fix a broken stud on the stock exhaust
manifold i was runnin as I had replaced my broken
aftermarket header. Ahh I miss those days.
anyways all went well I pulled the head splitting
coolant in the cylI. I mopped it up and then pulled
the pan and switched out the pistons.
* Here's where I messed up.*
I put the good cyl. head on not remembering to check the
oil galleys in the block for coolant anyway after i was done
and started it up and shut er down after running for awhile
I check the lifters valve lash and found to my horror my
oil was a light brown creamy color. this was only after
finding the car had difficulties turning over with the starter
i even took the battery to l;es swabbies to have it charged
the car would start up and run fine it seemed no noise seemed
like it ran fine though it would want to turn over without great
difficulties after shutting down. after finding the light creamy oil
surprise. I decided to pull the pan the next day and pull the
rod caps and look at the bearing.
* My luck only gets worse believe that.*
So I replace the oil after pulling the pan & checking the bearings.
rotating the mass at the crank after tightening 1-4 and 2-3 rod
bearings seemed to rotate fine. So when I put the plugs in and
tried to turn it over it was being really a pain cause it didn't
want to turn over it finally did though and started and ran
fine well with no noise I didn't drive it
what i did was run the rpms up a Lil with my hand on the throttle
body for a few minutes I was doing this at about 1800
tops rpm when it just seized up and stopped running. Guess
I didnt clean off all the creamy oil or something hmmm wonder
if my torque wrench is reading right.
So it wont budge I have got back up on the stands with the wheels
off and the oil drained out Ill pull the pan Sunday and maybe the
pistons also. this latest endeavor has kept me wrenching for 3 days
now.. though the fixed exhaust stud on the ex manifold is nice .. I filled
the hole and drilled n replaced 4 dollar donut gasket its sealed nicely. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

Did you use plasti-gauge when torquing the rod bearings?
Did you use new rod bearings?
Did you use new rings on the used pistons..and how did they fit in the holes? _________________ 1976 924

the rings are a lil over a year old &
the rings were just bought over
from the motor as it was before.
ran fine then. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

I though you were always supposed to use new rings when swapping pistons, isn't that a strict rule? _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

You can get away with swapping the rings as Joe has done...but not the rod bearings. There could be 100 reasons it is binding up....Joe is a bit short on his answers...... _________________ 1976 924

Its fixed yea the torque wrench screwed up I thought but no it was water in the oil causing it to bind. When I removed the pan to check it out the first time I only rechecked the bottem rod bearings well after what I did today a thorough exam of the rod bearings #3 had just partialy spun sticking to the crank I had to pry it off & scrape all the bearing material off the crank then
polish the journal up with some fine emory paper. I went thru each rod bearing and checked them top to bottem. Oh and the reason I didnt have to worry about my extra bearings is that I plastiguaged them all last year keeping thew good ones I also think I had my torque wrench set to high..
all is good once agian though.. to sweet. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

Shoot read your haynes book rings are checked by measuring
gap after being placed in the cyl. off the pistin.. mine are fairly new
so
I just switched them rod bearings are only 35 bucks a set I plastiguaged all
the ones I got from the 4 motors I have. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

Yea Adam it twas a learning experience for sure cause I
eventually had to switch out the oil pump. Seems I forgot
to torque a rod cap bolt ..well it came off spun another
bearing I had to pull the engine I was in a hurry when
I put it together and well I didn't clean out oil galleys in
the block I guess ... cause it toasted the oil pump this
cost me a crank also. Runs really good though after
all this ... Hey know what make sure you torque down
the crank pulley which requires a parking brake or
better yet do it right after installing the crank just put
the oil pump on and the pulley too ! I ended up shearing
off the pin that holds the pulley in place well that
shifted the timing resulting in a no run. I had to
drill the pin out from the crank ..
from there I busted s drill bit & had to get that out the hole
on the crank... 'All' is well though besides haven a stock motor
that runs good I have a fresh alt mount giving a steady 14
volt at idle n 13.7 under full load that's lights ,fan , heater on.
Plus I have new heat exchanger flange with rubber o rings
and hoses .. its so nice to have heat to take the fog off the
windows when driven at night in the rain.. I think I drove
without a heater for most of last winter .. that was rough
I didn't enjoy it at all. This time around its all nice n toasty
with clear windshield. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

Well I wrapped my grant steering wheel with a vinyl
wrap
makes it nice and big & easy to grasp 'Also'
picked up the blue lights there nice to drive by at night
though I don't know about what the police think see in the
blue light shows thru the window like it does.
... Ive also hooked up my csv to a switch and find its a great
addition as a boost switch gives my car a boost when used
on acceleration as a 5th injector. I use it on takes offs thru
2nd then shut it off though it helps again on acceleration
while cruising. I'm experimenting on that.
