Hello,

Does somebody know if it is possible to put a 944 S2 engine into a 924S.

My engine broke down and now I'm thinking of putting a 3,0 16v from the 944 S2 into my 924 S

yes, it will work it has the same motor mounts as the 924s/944 engine, you will need the comp and probably the updated engine loom though, and maybe the tranny to hold the extra power

for the amount you are going to spend, you might just want to rebuild the engine you have.

But yeah, it's possible... The early 924's engine bay would need to be opened up. I think in 1979 they opened it up bigger for the turbo 924 models.

I don't think the bay changed at all from 78-80

My bad, it was a 944S engine into a 924 turbo, anyways, i typed the article.

"Porsche 944s cost a lot more 10 years ago than they do now, which meant this swap seemed like a good idea at the time. John Harris, who had four 924s in his family bought this 924 Turbo new in 1980 and maintained it well. It was special to him. One day, it wouldn't pass its smog check. Whether the mechanic was shady or incompetent was never revealed, but his pognosis was a new turbo, fuel distributor and perhaps complete overhail or more would be required. Harris cast out for alternatives and came up with a low-milage 1987 944S engine. This newer, naturally aspirated mill was more powerful than the 924 Turbo and Harris decided it was the right upgrade. Unfortunately, it was far from a bolt-in swap. Porsche 924 and 944 engine mounts are different enough that the 944 mounts had to be welded to the unibody. A custom radiator was fabricated and mounted father forward , and quite a bit of plumbing and wiring was done before the car turned a wheel. Everthing was done right, done very carefully, with plenty of time taken to make it clean. Harris was pleased with the results even though he eventually installed the "junk" engine in his other 924 Turbo and found it was without fault. Today the 944S is not a super-expensive car to buy, and simply purchasing one would be easier, faster, and give better results, and probably cost less than this swap did. But though those are all factors to consider in any swap, the ultimate result is your own satisfaction. It's your car; do what makes you happy"

Yes it can be done and has been done. Excellence has an article on a 944S that changed to 944S2 motor. Also I know of a shop in Florida that has done this conversion 3 or 4 times. There is also a guy out west who is having his 924S 1988 changed to 968 motor. You need to change a bunch of things like wire harness, computers, exhaust, flywheel, clutch and such.

There is no issue with the compartment though. The air intake needs to be modified I believe though.

Thanks for the given advice. The engine I was looking for is an 1991 944S2 from a collision car (total loss), I am thinking about buying the complete car so all the stuf I wil need is still on the car.

I have forgoten to mention my own 924S is from 1986 so this should fit.

The tranny from the s2 is the same as the standard 944? If so, then it looks like a great idea

what a huge project....not exactly economical, but high marks on the cool factor!! I know of at least one 931 that underwent a suceessful 951 power train conversion, i think the guy was in Pennsylvania someplace....
