|

Before I go ahead and do the Audi 3B/ABY engine swap, I need to know if PCA will get stinky with me when I try registering it to race.
I'm hoping that since the original engine was designed by Audi and manufactured by either Audi or AMC, they will let me enter it. It'd be funny if it ended up in the prepared class, but most likely it would be in the GT-3R or S class.
Anyway let me know, please?

Yeah, I'd be willing to bet they'd get stinky with you. PCA Club Racing rules are at:
http://www.pca.org/pca/clubrace/docs/forms.htm
I think there's a clause in there about requiring Porsche engines and floorpans. Read it yourself to be sure, though.
Engine swaps are one of the things we're looking at for GTS, but this would still not be covered. BMWCCA allows it, naturally assuming you're still using a BMW engine, and classifies the car based on the engine used. I'd see us (GTS) doing something similar, and allowing updates within the model line. So you could put a 968 or 951 motor in a 924 if you liked, but not a 911, 928, or Audi motor.
That being said, both NASA and SCCA have places for you to run that beast, the Super-Unlimited and Super Production classes, respectively. They're classed only on engine size. However I'm not sure if SCCA still allows turbos even in SPO/SPU. You might be completely stuck running with NASA. Apparently turbos rule in NASA SU, though - no multiplier for blowers or turbos! I remember a blown Miata at Beaverun last year, way cool... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Per PCA Club Racing rules.....The engine and tranny must be Porsche casings. In all classes stock or GT. You will not be allowed to run. If you swapped a 928 and 944 you would then run in the Prepared class. With a street car with one thing missing required in Letter Class you are then moved to the next highest class. A 924S would be GT4S-R car if taken out of stock requirements. You also are to run DOT tires in Letter Class- slicks then put you in the GT Class. Sorry! D _________________ Dal Glassinger |

Well, that kinda sucks the big one, but I'm not going to let that stop me from doing the swap. Time to go see what NASA is all about.
Thanx guys! |

just curious here puppy, but what're the output figures on the new engine, and are you swapping out a 2.0 or a 2.5 (944)?
Also, how're you dealing with the difference in transmissions? or will this thing just bolt on to your current tranny? _________________ 1987 924S 2.5L SOHC. |

Well actually, it's going to be a 2.3 =)
I'm going to shoehorn an Audi inline 5 turbo engine into my engine bay. More specifically, an Audi 3B, AAN, or ABY (RS2), engine, probably the 3B, because of its power curve. It makes 230HP at 5600rpm, but most importantly, 258 ft/lbs at 1900rpms--and stays flat all the way to the peak HP--in stock form. It's OBD-1, uses a Motronic EFI system, and even has an overboost system. I've been told these engines can produce up to 400-500HP, but I'm just going to concentrate on getting it in my car first.
I would like to find a group in the SC area I could road race with.
