Would a 1.8 litre high compression gti engine mount into a 924? A friend was kinda curious.

anythings possible given enough time, skill and money.

The real question is "why bother?".

Looking at 1.8 GTI specs the 2001 year motor was only rated at 150hp. None of the US-spec engines before 1992 had more power that a stock euro-spec 1977 924 (125hp for the 924 with 1 cam and 2 valves, 123hp or less for the GTI with 2 cams and 4 valves). The '92 GTI just manages 134hp. And I'm talking about the 16v GTIs here.

Interesting that the original VW GTIs that struggled to make more than 100hp are regularly refered to as "the original hot hatch" while a 924 of the same vintage weighing about the same with an extra 20hp was a "gutless wonder". Go figure.

Peter, I agree, I never understood the fuss about the GTI's, everyone I drove was gutless and "buzzy".

I had a 75 Rabbit (Golf) with a 2 barrel (stock) carb, that was much more fun to drive than any GTI I've been in. Of course in those days even the carpet was an option, so I didn't get it. The car was light and fast.
