I HAVE A 1982 931 WITH SB CHEVY MOTOR CARBERATED. I BOUGHT THE CAR IN NEW YORK FOR $1600 dollars. IT HAD A TIRED 350, SO MY MECHANIC IS IN THE PROCESS OF REPLACING IT WITH A REBUILT 350 WITH 0 MILES ALL STOCK. I PAID 650$ for the new motor , which is a 4bolt main out of a 86 truck and i'M UNSURE OF THE HORSE POWER. MY PROBLEM IS , I'TS NOT POSI ! OR LIMITED SLIP ! IS THERE A UNIT I CAN REPLACE IT WITH????

The 1982 931 used a transmission which is nearly identical to the 944 tranny, so any differential that would fit a 944 will fit your tranny.

I looked up the differential on www.quaifeamerica.com, and they only listed them for 1986 and up 944s, although I'm not sure what the difference in transmission is.

You would probably be better off to find a 944 or 968 transmission that already has a LSD, it wouldn't cost a great deal more, and you could be sure it would work.

If you look under suspension on the left bar at www.944S2.com, you'll find some info there.

There are also horror stories of it destroying expensive transaxles... I can't verify any of these.

I think it's better to spend the extra dollar, and get a good differential, like a Quaife, or a Guard Transmission... Tom Pultz has a GT diff, and he has said nothing bad of it that I've heard. They're quite a bit cheaper than a Quaife unit.

Phantom Grip will not even handle 300 flywheel HP.

I would recommend getting a 944 Turbo transaxle, whether with or without the LSD, LSD being preferred obviously. Anything less in the 924/944 series of trannies will not be able to handle the SBC's output. This is based on an acquaintance's experiments with a SBC in his own project car.

The average opinion on the Phantom Grip is that it's junk, mediocre at best.

YMMV Al
