I have a customer who wants to sell his RUNNING, DRIVING 87 951 for 3500.00
It would be a good route for such a project, as everything is there, ready to be swapped.
As far as the crossmember, Jim Pasha told me the 924 steel one can be reinforced and used for the swap. Another route (albeit more complicated) is to cut off the 944 crossmember mount additions that were welded on by the factory to use the 944 crossmember and weld them into the 924. After all, every 944,951,968 was built from a 924 chassis - you'd be repeating what the factory did to use that later crossmember.
If anyone is interested in the 951, let me know wstudios@mindspring.com _________________ keith

Beautiful, awesome proposition <drool>. I haven't seen a 951 that cheap since, ... well i've *never* seen a 951 that cheap! Re: this particular endeavour - I don't think I will be attempting anything soon since my 924 has been confiscated by the Pigs (doing autobahn speeds where it was verboten with no license spells loss of my first, but not last 924- the head was blown, so you won't see me crying). Needless to say, I still have my 944 although today was a bit of a stressful moment - I lost the right rear suspension making a left hand turn on a residential street, now I'm calling Parts Heaven and am seriously carless, which is never any fun to be without the p-car. Damn, I wish I had 35 hundo! Nonetheless, the project will go on, funds pending. _________________ denis d.

if ya realy think about it, making a custom cross member isnt that callenging.. you dont need to mandrel bend the tubing, who cares if it is all rounded and stuff just cut up small sections...i could do this in a garage with a welder and a chop saw..and for those who say welding is to hard...3 letters: M-I-G |

Of course, we all understand that tihs particular feat is completely possible, ths is not the point, it's a question of what is required in terms of method, resources and skill. It's understandable that not all of us have MIG skills, etc. But my whole MO is to see some simple information produced ("procedure", a "how-to", extra tips, "gotchas") for this task. Having a well-documented write-up at some point would nice. People can see what it would take to make it happen instead of all these "what-ifs". Some would have the data to do it, and others would be able to decide against it. With the right funds to do it, I ask Why not? I would see it as a purely esoteric exercise, one that would hopefully help me build my tinkering skills. _________________ denis d.

Hi all, I may be able to give you guys some useful info on all of this. I am in the middle of converting my 81 931 to 944NA engine. I can also confirm that the mounting points for the crossmembers are very different. After getting some good advice and looking at it for a long time, I decided to use the existing 931 crossmember (same as na 924). I took some measurements and then cut two right angel sections out of my xmember with a plasma cutter. I then welded in some strong angled steel to make a place for the 944 motor mounts to sit. The motor mounts are angled, so you don't want to make your mounting surface parallel to the ground, you want to angle it so the mounts bolt down flush. This is fairly simple, and you don't have to cut or weld on the frame rail. The car is not on the road yet, so I don't know for sure how it will act under cornering g's, but I can push on teh engine like crazy and it feels really solid. I talked to Jim Pasha and he knows of people who have done it this way and had no probs, so I think it should be fine. By the way, you can leave the portrusions for the stock 924 motor mounts on the car; they don't interfere. That way you can return it to stock later if you want (plus it's just easier to leave them on.)
You may be wondering why on earth I'm using a na 944 motor. The stock 931 motors don't run well, they blow head gaskets if you use fun boost, they have a TON of lag (even with later small turbo) and they are managed by hodge podge electrics-very unreliable. You can find full 944 na engines WITH harness, ecu, even exhaust and stuff for really cheap. I got mine for $400! The 944 na was a pretty simple and bullet proof motor with forged crank and bearing ladder, puts out about what a stock 931 turbo did in America, and the parts are cheep and very available. And if I rev the wee out of it and blow it up, it's cheap to replace (unlike the dohc 944 motors). It's also all aluminum. I'm taking a ton of weight out of my 931, I should easily be down to 2500lbs, maybe 2400, and should still be sane for road driving on the weekends. hp to weight ration is approaching that of the porky 944s2, and for cheeep (that's why we drive these cars, right? I probably have $1800 in the car after I sold off my valuable turbo engine stuff). My hydraulic clutch and torque tube bolt right up, so far the hardest part is mounting the 944 radiator. I will have to run 944 front sway, as the stock sway interferes with the oil pan. Don't forget, you've gotta wire the thing--i just pulled out my interior and slapped a full wiring harness from an 88 924s in, morot plugs right in and the harness is a little lighter. I have some other tricks to save weight and such, but this post is getting way too long.

Hey guys, I just got my old '87 924S back! A little beat up and worse for wear but restorable. In exchange for my '78 924. I'm definitely re-reading this thread.

If I remember correctly, someone on Rennlist was doing the 951 swap into the 924S. I plan on doing this in about 2 years. As for the Intercooler, You can get the 951 nose panel and Head lights, and it will make way for the intercooler, or you can mount it like Alex Roy.

Keith, what else would you like to know? I am making steady progress on the swap, taking care of each little hurldle as I come to it. I am fabricating fuel lines that will link the 944 fuel rail with the stock 931 fuel lines that enter in on the passenger side of the engine compartment. I used an early 944 na motor, because they have less complicated emmissions and wiring. I did use a late model fuel rail, though, so the lines would come out on the passenger side(early 944 motors have fuel lines that come up on the driver's side.) I also am trying to figure out how to tension the accesory belt by swiveling the alternatore instead of the ac condensor as most every 944 does--i stripped out the ac to save ~70lbs--but then the alternater swings into the air box...hmm. Some other things I'm doing: Stripping out carpet and sound deadening materials and rear seats. cleaning the glue off the floor and spraying a thin layer of rubberized truck bed lining on for a little noise dampening but little weight penalty. also stripped out the worthless heater and all ducting, and ditched the center console. I will make an aluminum bezel where the top of the consol meet the dash to house the oil/temp/air-fuel gauges. I will be installing a small DC to AC converter under the dash so that on cold days if I want to drive it on the street I can just plug in a little electric space heater. That way when I hit the track, I won't have the extra weight and the wirirng is a lot simpler. I am also in the idea stages of fabbing fixed headlights-the stock ones way about 35lbs and clutter the engine bay. I have a little fiberglass experience that might come in handy. if any one has any specific questions, feel free to e-mail, I don't spend too much time on the board, but I check my e-mail daily.
