We just got back from a SCCA Driver's School at Watkins Glen and also a NYRRSC Race today from the Glen. It was my father's turn to go to driver's school in our 1978 ITA racer which he completed and obtained his driver's liscense on Saturday. Our 924 ran good all weekend. It was really wet and cold (typical for that time of year) and we had no major problems. Get this, we were 4 seconds faster that a T1 Corvette (1:43 VS 1:47) and that T1 driver was recently invited to the Runnoffs. Then today for the regional my father started dead last on the grid of about 38 cars because the car stalled and could not get fired up without a push start. By the end of the race he worked his way up to 26th. The field was mostly, ITS, ITA, ITB, Spec RX-7, and Spec Mazda Miata and he did one hell of a job in the rain and he ran most of the weekend WITHOUT wipers!! Thank God for Rain-X. He finished 4th in ITA. We finally have worked out most of the bugs and the car is really running fine. We're so very excited and looking forward to my next driver's school early next year at Summit Point WV. A big thank you goes out to Vaughan Scott, because without his technical advice, coaching and verbal support we would be very lost. Now our little bastard is gunning for those Honda's.

Sweet!!! Glad to hear the results! Congrats to your dad, that's a great drive! I think you've seen now how great these cars are in the rain and other marginal conditions - especially compared to the Hondas. I've found that when the track gets really greasy due to overtemp (have not yet run in the rain in 3 years) that the Hondas tend to lose more time than I do.
Been wondering where you've been hiding...
Upgrade plans for the winter??? I'm ready to build a bottom end to match my top end, slap in a Quaife or the like, and put on the Bilsteins I've been waiting a year for. Long overdue, and now my Koni's are leaking they're so blown...
The best news yet is that the car's now making proper power, now that I've got a working control pressure regulator. So, given what I've been able to do with 3/4 power (I'm guessing), next weekend at Beaverun (a short track like I'm most used to) with the 944's of the 944 Cup, should be veru interesting! I might actually be able to pass one!
I don't imagine you feel like coming up and hanging out? John Brown's planning on it... and they have a DE-like thing, the high-performance driving school (lapping day format) - you might be able to get the racecar out there and turn some laps...

Well we put it on the dyno a few days ago and just by playing with the timing we were able to pick up 5 more horespower. At the Glen, he said the car was very quick, the quickest he's ever had it. With driver, were at weight. In the rain, He was passing a lot of people early in the race. I talked to other racers and some took it easier as this was one of the last events of the season and they were just trying not to crash their cars.
We didn't realize that 944 Cup was running next weekend at Beaver Run, but would be there in a heartbeat if we didn't already have other commitments. I am looking into the two next events at Summit Point though.
We had the car on the rack yesterday and have some work to do. We are going to replace the right rear stock brake line (metal brake lines are in the works), replace the gasket in the muffler, and install longer wheel studs. After these needs are addressed we might then look into 944 Cup in November or early December.
Over the winter: Well we need to address the roll cage. The 6 points need to be welded to the car and we need to install the NASCAR door bars. We also may have to look into a quick release steering wheel if we get the door bars. Where did you get yours? We also may replace the cam and pull the motor to make sure everything is in good shape for another season. Other than that I don't think were going to address any other issues just yet. Because too many changes at one time isn't going to help if I don't have much seat time to begin with. On my with list though, I'd like to get the camber plates from Paragon and then upgrade the stock coil over front struts down the road.
Were chomping at the bit to have a go at it with you someday soon!!! |

Would you be willing to disclose your dyno numbers and the modifications that have been done? Thanks!

He should be, they'd better be legal! LOL
Yeah, bummer we can't meet up this year, but perhaps next year - if things go well this weekend, I'll probably want to come back for more 944Cup events, and so will likely make it down to SP at least once.
Any recommendations on gasketing material for headers? Mine broke, suffering through but have exhaust leaks, not helping the power deal.
My quick release steering wheel hub came from Racer's Wholesale as I recall, but we had to fab up a sleeve for the steering column in order to make it all happen. Minor PITA, some time w/ a hacksaw, and with the welder. It's definitely necessary even for me to get in the car with good door bars.
Did you diddle with the fuel injection tuning on the dyno? What timing did you end up running, and what gas? I haven't been able to justify a dyno run yet, due to the fact that I haven't even built the motor yet, but still...
I wonder if NASA's going to have a poprtable dyno at Beaverun for pulls between sessions...

I believe so, If I ran the dyno test. My father ran the test and he would know, I'll have to ask him though. Otherwise, this is a clean motor for SCCA. Everything in the motor is stock. We rebuilt the motor with the view that it's gotta last a while so we really don't have anything trick in it.
Vaughan, I'll look into the quick release steering hub. I think it may be needed if we upgrade the door bars. I think we might be doing Beaver Run next year for sure even though it's quite a haul. If we know your going to be there next season we would make every effort to get there and have a meeting of the minds. |

Just as a followup, in case anyone else is reading... I talked w/ Jeremy last night, and also got an email from his dad with some more detail... some concerns about the data, though I don't doubt the improvement that can be made with timing; the biggest point to be made is that these are torque motors, not HP motors, and, in the immortal words of Carroll Shelby, "HP sells cars, torque wins races" (if I got it something like what he actually said)... stock 924 motor has a flat torque band from 3000-5000rpm. Any dyno tuning should seek to improve that. It is very easy to put in a 4 degree cam key to retard the cam timing, giving a major HP gain. However, it's at high RPM, and at the cost of low-end torque.
Motor improvements should focus on torque band improvements. Furthermore, low-end improvements will be more productive due to the head breathing limitations.

Amen.
Looks like I will be at BR instructing the HPDE for them and LJ will be in the Advanced HPDE group (not the Cup). Should be interesting as have never been to that track. But then, almost no one else has either! Working hard just to get the car ready for a HPDE much less the November 944 Cup!
Staying at the Holiday Inn. |
