looking at the parts catalog, the rack is a VW part (from the golf/rabbit according to folklore) but the bellows are "171" prefixed parts which seems to be the designation for generic parts. So golf parts "might" fit but no guarantees.
Give Porsche a call. Their prices are not that outrageous and a lot cheaper than replacing the rack.
The catalog shows the steering shaft and universals as a single part. You'll probably need to find a steering specialist and get a professional opinion on whether they can be safely replaced. |

I only have the North American parts catalog. The part number for the shaft and universals is 477 419 951 F
You'll need to check with your local Porsche agent if that is the same part for RHD cars.
As it's a VW part (477 prefix) you could also check with VW. VW will have a different first 3 digits for the part number but the second and third groups will be the same so VW will call it something like a "111 419 951 F". Just explain what you're looking for and tell them it'll be off a mid to late 70's superbeetle or golf. Phone them mid-morning or mid-afternoon when things are quiet and they might be helpful. |

The steering universal's in the shaft can be replaced. Much cheaper than an new shaft - last time I priced the shaft from the Dealer in NZ it was NZ$700.
I've had the universal's replaced on by turbos twice now (in 14 year sof ownership)the latest was two months ago and the guy who did it used the universal out of a Toyota Land Cruiser. What's required is the whole teh universal sit in is about 12mm dia and the toyota ones are 12.5 mm dia - hence the hole was reamed out to suit and the universal's inserted.
The rubber bellows I replace these recently and used Porsche parts the cost was NZ$20 for the right side and NZ$22.50 for the left. You should also confirm with the parts guys if you're only buying one that you physically identify the unit of the Fiche /computer screen as this item has not been correctly transferred over for the right hand drive. I initially only wanted the left bellows and they ordered it. When it arrived it was actually a right hand side even though the part number was for a left. We then got the right hand side and this was a left-hand unit.

Not sure what you mean here but all Ron did was take the shaft, knock the old uni's out, ream the holes bigger and then put the Toymotor's in and then put a dab of weld on each cup.
Compared to the other original shaft they look identical.
For some reason one end of the shaft teh universal's are looser than the other but we think this was due to the universal's being purchased at different times and possibly differnet batch. Still passes WOF standard and feels better than the original.
Used pass through Huntly on the way to the ski fields when I lived in Auckland and grab some bread at the bakery there till it burned down, really nice bread too. |

John,Staking is the term used for the way the factory used something like a centre punch and put dimples around the uni's cap to stop it coming out, will go the tojo route with a dob of weld.Worked at that bakery when i was 14,saved money to buy my first car a 1963 ford anglia 105e and run amuk when i got a licence at 15.In my late teens was a u/g coal miner at the east mine and owned one of the few 914's in NZ at the time,it came in from barbados and i went to school with the son of the guy that brought it in.Have you had to rebuild your torque tube at anytime,i know you have done alot of k's in your car, nothing like skiing on a active volcanoe. |

Haven't had to rebuild the tube - been lucky on that one I guess.
Skiings OK it's when it decides to blow it's top and there is good snow it's a real bummer.
I priced for doing some work on the conveyors on teh mien once and we went unground to have a look. Not really my type of work environment. I'll stick to oil rigs and power stations thanks |
