Step 6
Plastic Protective Tube for Shift Rod

Factory Workshop Manual says:
Quote:
6.) Remove plug from central tube housing. Push back protective tube for shift rod far enough
so that it is outside of the central tube housing. Insert a large screwdriver through the opening
in the central tube housing and open the tab on the protective tube.

Photo of plastic protective tube with tab (arrow) and direction of motion (arrow) toward transmission body. (Note: There are 2 tabs at either end of plastic protective tube. Only need to depress tab at transmission end.)

Plastic Protective Tube

Q: How do you depress 'tab' enough to slide protective tube through hole in transmission body without breaking it?

No need to remove plastic protective tube prior to removing 016/9 transaxle. Initially, lower central tube bellhousing and transaxle bellhousing halves together until central tube bellhousing rests on the rear axle cross tube. This will require jack to be placed at the center of gravity of the transaxle. Then pull transaxle to the rear of the car until differential bumps up against spare tire well to separate bellhousing flanges. It helps to keep rear muffler support arm attached to transaxle to be used to steer transaxle while dropping. Keep bellhousing flange halves parallel while dropping transaxle. Once differential clears spare tire well, pull transaxle to the rear of the car while lowering and plastic protective tube will pull out of central tube bellhousing half undamaged.
