Having just done it in the past week, here are my tips for a newby:
Take lots of photos/label all wires/use baggies
Disconnect battery
Drain oil and water
Remove crossover pipe to throttle body
Disconnect turbo from exhaust
Disconnect J pipe from exhaust
Remove distributor
Remove coil
Disconnect cold start injector
Remove inlet manifold
Disconnect heater hoses/TTS wires/Oil pressure wire
Remove cambelt
and then the head _________________ 80/81 932/8 ROW |

OK, we got a few consecutive minutes without rain so I was able to take a closer look. The two turbo-to-manifold bolts I can reach from the top were amazingly easy to break loose. "Break" barely even applies. I did spray them a few times with PB Blaster, but I can't believe they've been on there from the factory, I think a PO had the turbo off. I haven't tried to get to the other one yet, I'm sure that one will be fun.
I know the J-pipe will be easy because I had that off a few months ago when I replaced my wastegate.
The intake manifold does have me scratching my head. The top bolts are easy, but I can't see how to reach the bottom bolts with everything in the car. It almost looks like it might be easier to just remove the head with both exhaust and intake manifolds still attached. Am I missing something? _________________ -----------------------------------------

All 8 are available to you from the top of the manifold...... _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Hmmm. I'll look again. Do you think it's advantageous to take it off before removing the head? _________________ -----------------------------------------

Not too bad actually once the exhaust is out of the way.

That picture helps. I'm curious though, is that a stud? I thought the one with the stud was only on S1 cars. Maybe I read that wrong. I know both of the other two on my car were bolts.

My 931 is a 1981 model but the engine and transmission are from a 1980 931.
On my car the turbo is bolted to the exhaust manifold. Two bolts on one side....one bolt on the other. In the picture above the hole where the screw goes is faintly circled in yellow.
Porsche updated the hardware at some point...with these parts....Screw 93112319700 and Sleeve 93112319900. $85 a set X 3

I also went through that tedious process recently. I removed the head with the exhaust and intake manifold still attached. Its bloody heavy so its not something help from a friend, wife or wathever is recommended _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Interesting...I guess that explains why my bolts weren't frozen...they were definitely replaced in the past, as they aren't even stock bolts. Regular ol' hex-heads, with no spacers. Hmmm...

Save your money. Use super strong studs and aerotight stainless locking nuts _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

I don't think I would want studs there. How would you ever remove the head/intake manifold without removing the turbo?
My two top bolts came out surprisingly easy, but the bottom one is giving me a bit of resistance. I dosed it with more PB Blaster so hopefully tomorrow.
I still don't see an obvious way to the lower intake manifold bolts. Are you just using a long extension and fishing in there until you find it? I can't even see most of the bolt heads! I'm just going to take it out with the head if I can't figure out a better way, it seems people have done it both ways.

I've removed the head twice using studs in the turbo + manifold without removing the turbo.......just lifts straight off. The stud(s) also makes sure the gasket stays straight as your drop the head back on...
Two turbo studs still in place with head off, one is in the exhaust manifold.....helped line up the head to stop the dowel pin scuffing the head as it landed
The 8 bolt holes from the top of the intake, see them .....?

Turbo studs: Interesting. I didn't think it would be able to clear those studs, but clearly I'm wrong.
Intake manifold bolts: Oh, hell, I'm an idiot. I was so convinced the bolt holes were on the bottom I completely missed that. No wonder I couldn't see them! Thank you for that picture, that was definitely helpful! _________________ -----------------------------------------
