|
|
If you don't drive the car daily, it breaks right?
Recently started to do some maintenance job on my 931 and this thing came out (watch with sound).
https://youtu.be/JDaZDh9CTc4
I can notice it only when idling. Did not observe anything annoying when driving the car. It shows up for few seconds, and disappears, then again 1-2 seconds rattling. Turbo is dying and resonating? Not an expert with turbochargers here.
Tried to spot where the sound comes from with a steel rod attached to my ear. It's either turbocharger case or BOV (is that correct name for the integrated valve?).
Any hints welcome. _________________ ---

Bov piston rattling inside the turbo. Will likely be one or both nylon washers broken down on the end caps. _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Many thanks for the hint. Will check that, just need to find some time to remove the turbo from the car. _________________ ---

I was able to get both end caps off and replace those seals without removing the turbo. It was a pain in the butt but it can be done. Hardest part is getting the right tool on those bolts...it took several different ones. Also, there wasn't enough clearance to fully remove the piston from the valve, but it didn't really matter. _________________ -----------------------------------------

I found it easy to remove the cap on the chassis rail side plus the piston and spring. I gave up with the cap on the engine side
Despite having brand new nylon washers on both caps after a full turbo rebuild, I endured the rattle for a few months. It finally went away after removing the piston and spring and stretching the spring a little to tighten it all up to avoid the rattle.
Taking the turbo off will take you at least 4-6hrs off and the same back on. So that's the last resort. Plus you will open up new issues by removing _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Im not afraid of time consuming works, not after I did clutch in my late 951 Just finished wheel bearings all corners and big brakes. BOV needs to wait a bit. Will let you know how it goes with BOV. _________________ ---
