I think something fell off of my steering rack..
Their is an empty hole like directly under where the grease zerk is but on the bottom.. What is supposed to go there?

All of a sudden my steering is stiff and if I lift the front wheels it feels notchie, like it sticks a bit every 1/4ish turn..
Kinda sucks..

You think my rack is screwed or could a strip-clean-rebuild fix it?
And probably some sort of plug missing off the bottom?

I think it was fine last fall and has sat basically until just recently, and now this..

Do you have a pic? Is it the rack preload adjuster?

Looks like the port for the lock tool, a sharp fine threaded screw which locks the rack in center position for wheel alignment. I think its just a rubber plug in the hole if i remember correctly.

And that's not a grease zerk up there either.. Felt like one..

Quick and dirty way to grease the thing up? Take that plate thing off and stuff er full?

I pulled that boot off there and stuffed it with grease but it just squirts out the hole and didn't really get any better..

Ok... It was the U-joints and not the rack, despite their being an open hole in the rack.. Just a rubber plug eh? Ok, I'll find something..

WD40 fixed the joints for now but probably should replace those U-joints in the steering shaft some day..
Should spray em with something a bit heavier than that for now too..

Buy an M10 x 1.0 zerk fitting, dig out the remains of that plastic plug, and thread the fitting in - it's perfect for greasing the rack.

When greasing, be sure to hit it with the grease gun at multiple points along the rack (as in, turn the wheel to different spots, work it back and forth).

As correctly noted, that's the place you can screw in a tapered bolt to lock the rack at center for alignments.

I'm guessing you may not have adjusted the preload on the rack, since that's the other thing you thought was a zerk? Loosen the lock nut, 17 or 19mm, then turn the adjusting screw until it's just shy of finger-tight. Too tight, it'll get rid of play but you'll wear the rack out.
