1981 Porsche 924 Turbo (931) EUR.
I am replacing gaskets and cleaning out the housing for oil filter and thermostat.
I am assembling the thermostat as it came apart (and the only way naturally to me) . When inspecting the assy. the piston is in the cold position closest to the cap, thus leaving the ports to the cooler open!!
And when the temp rises the piston rises and .... closing the port to the oil cooler.
This is beyond me. Here is a picture of the assy. This is as shown in the parts list and as it came apart.
Can anyone explain the workings pls. Is this correct?

A possible explanation is that when piston is down, linking both oil cooler ports, there is no pressure difference and the oil do not flow trough the cooler, but when the piston closes , the oil is forces via the cooler.
